A thyroid storm is a life-threatening medical emergency that occurs when the thyroid gland produces extremely high levels of thyroid hormones, causing a hypermetabolic state. This rare but potentially fatal condition often affects people with untreated or undertreated hyperthyroidism.

Symptoms can include:

- Severe tachycardia or atrial fibrillation
- High fever
- Agitation or delirium
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Heart failure

If left untreated, a thyroid storm can lead to serious complications, including:

- Cardiac arrest
- Respiratory failure
- Coma
- Death

Prompt medical attention is crucial. Treatment typically involves medications to reduce thyroid hormone production, beta blockers to control heart rate, and supportive care to manage symptoms and prevent complications.
