Over The Counter Hearing Devices… A Cheaper Alternative to Hearing Aids?

A recent study comparing this new class of hearing devices with traditional hearing aids noted: “the devices performed almost as well and are much cheaper”. Why is this important news for sufferers of hearing loss? An article on WebMD explains that “hearing aids can cost thousands of dollars, and Medicare doesn’t cover them” making them out of reach for many people.

Another interesting comment from the WebMD article is that these “OTC” devices are most helpful when purchased from an audiologist who can fine tune them to an individual's needs. However, many audiologists are not selling them yet. Indiana In-Home Hearing is proud to be one of the few offering these devices. And in the month of July, we are even running a special to introduce them to the public.

May is Better Hearing Month! Sign up now for free hearing screenings in your home, for your employees or in our office.

Hearing loss currently affects more than 36 million Americans today. Although hearing problems are commonly associated with the normal aging process, more than half of all hearing-impaired persons are younger than 65. With the increased use of personal music players (MP3s) and earbuds, the number of Americans experiencing hearing loss at a younger age is growing.

On average, most Americans consider hearing loss a condition that is simply associated with aging and don’t know how to recognize the condition or who is qualified to diagnose and treat the condition. In an effort to raise public awareness for the growing number of Americans suffering from hearing loss, Indiana In-Home Hearing is celebrating Better Hearing Month this May.

Do you work in a dangerous environment for your hearing?

Approximately 30 million workers are exposed to hazardous levels of noise on the job. Another 9 million are at risk for hearing loss from other agents such as solvents and metals.

Preventing Hearing Loss is possible
Although hearing loss is a common effect of aging,
some Americans are starting to lose their hearing earlier
in life as a result of exposure to noise, noise-induced
hearing loss. Noise-induced hearing loss is 100%
preventable.

Wear hearing protection such as earplugs and earmuffs when being exposed to levels of noise over 85 decibels (dB) for extended periods of time.
