Jenell Marie Huebotter

Jenell Marie Huebotter, 89, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

Jenell was born on January 8, 1937, in Freyburg, Texas, in Fayette County, to Emil Joseph Roeder and Velma Dieringer Roeder. She was the firstborn of six children, including two brothers and three sisters. She grew up in Schulenburg and resided in Freer, Texas, for more than 40 years, and in San Antonio for the past nine years. She married Freddie Huebotter in Kenedy, Texas, on May 19, 1964.

The simple pleasures in life were what Jenell enjoyed most. Saltwater fishing, gardening, sharing small talk over coffee or tea with her friends, reading Danielle Steel novels, and watching the Dallas Cowboys were among her favorites. She could fish for days and never get tired, even if she didn’t catch a single fish or only caught the occasional hardhead catfish. There were more flower beds in her yard than open space, and she knew what every plant was called and what it needed to grow. When away from home, she was an expert at swiping seeds and cuttings from plants she found interesting, and before long, she had those same plants growing in her yard. Whenever her friends stopped by, her children knew the kitchen was off-limits while she visited and caught up on happenings around town.

Her book collection included every novel written by Danielle Steel, including one signed by the author herself. Jenell was an avid fan and would eagerly await each new release. Football Sundays were sacred in her home, with a placard above the television that read, “Shut Up, The Cowboys Are Playing!” While humorous, it was also a statement of fact. One of the highlights of her life was attending a Cowboys game in person with her daughter, Leann, and son-in-law, Jon. When all was quiet, she found great peace sitting on the front porch, watching hummingbirds visit her feeders. A visiting cardinal was considered a bonus to her day.

Jenell was a longtime member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Freer, where she taught Faith Formation classes for many years. She was adamant that her children attend Mass every week and receive a strong religious education. She also believed in supporting her community, serving the school as a member of the Band Boosters and the citizens of Freer as an elections worker.

No matter the circumstances, Jenell always made sure her children were involved in activities that built character and fostered honesty and strong moral values. Over the years, she supported their involvement in Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, softball, baseball, and basketball, to name a few. Of course, no achievement was too small to be framed and displayed on the wall.

Jenell had a strong desire to embrace her German heritage and teach her children where they came from. German phrases such as danke schön and Gesundheit were common in her home. She located and kept in touch with relatives in Germany, writing them letters each Christmas to update them on her life over the past year. She continued this tradition until three years ago, when her health no longer allowed her to enjoy many of the activities she loved.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Freddie Huebotter; her parents; her brother, Emil Roeder Jr.; her sister, Violet Haba; her grandson, Connor Janysek; and her granddaughter, Nicolette Huebotter.

She is survived by two daughters, Leann (Jonathan) Darnell and Glenda (Mike) Douglass, both of San Antonio, Texas; two sons, Glen (Marquel) Huebotter of Cibolo and Neal (Renee) Huebotter of Richmond, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Michaela (Klinton) Krus, Alexandra (Tyler) Prihoda, Clayton Janysek, Justin Janysek, Holden Janysek, Carson Darnell, Mackenzie Darnell, Hannah Huebotter, Ella Huebotter, and Jakob Huebotter; three great-grandchildren, Kinsley Prihoda, Ryder Prihoda, and Elizabeth Prihoda; two sisters, Cynthia (Michael) Kosler and Judy Roeder, both of Schulenburg, Texas; one brother, Gene (Janet) Roeder of Boerne, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Three Rivers, followed by a Rosary at 7 p.m., led by Father Ryszard Zielinski.

The funeral Mass will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Three Rivers at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2026. Interment will follow at Three Rivers Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, and honorary pallbearers will be her great-grandchildren.
