Most people think a casket is designed to be completely sealed and waterproof.
It’s not.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions I see, so let’s break it down in a simple, honest way.
A casket is the container your loved one is placed in. They can be made of wood or metal and may have features that offer more protection than others, but no casket is truly airtight or waterproof over time. Natural elements will still make their way in.
An outer burial container is something different. This is what the casket is placed into before being lowered into the ground. You may hear it called a grave liner or a burial vault.
Some cemeteries require them and some do not.
The purpose is not to preserve the body. It is to support the ground above so it does not sink over time. This helps keep the cemetery safe and level for visitors.
There are also different types.
A non-sealed liner provides structural support.
A sealed vault is designed to limit the entry of water and air, but it is important to understand that nothing is completely permanent or fully sealed forever.
At the end of the day, these choices are not about preventing the natural process. They are about personal preference, cemetery requirements, and how you choose to honor your loved one.
This is why conversations like this matter. Because understanding your options now can make a very difficult time a little bit easier for the people you love.
