National Association for Children of Addiction

National Association for Children of Addiction Using our network of the most respected experts in the field, NACoA provides solutions to address these impacts effectively.

NACoA envisions a world in which no child who struggles because of family addiction will be left unsupported. NACoA gives those who touch children’s lives daily the training and tools needed to help them see the pain and confusion of struggling children and respond appropriately both systemically in their professions and personally with understanding hearts. In a word, our programs give a voice to impacted children who suffer in silence each day:
-Celebrating Families! ™, an evidence-based, trauma-informed, skill building program of 16 sessions serving the whole family: children ages birth-18, their parents & caregivers. Versions also available to support Hispanic & Native American families.
-Children's Program Kit, a comprehensive tool kit enabling implementation and ongoing managing of a complete children’s educational support program in schools, at treatment facilities, afterschool programs, weekend camps and summer day camps, or at religious institutions.
-The Clergy Education and Training Project®, developed in collaboration with major national faith organizations, it provides education and tools to help faith communities understand and address addiction and its devastating impact on families and children effectively.

Youth growing up in homes with parents who have substance use disorders (SUDs) face additional challenges during times when school is not in session, like during the holidays and winter break. Most kids and teens can’t wait for these breaks, but children growing up in homes impacted by the disease of addiction (COAs) are very often isolated and afraid. Continue reading to discover ways that a caring adult can make a difference in the lives of youth affected by parental SUDs, so they aren’t alone, afraid, or overwhelmed during the holidays and winter break.

Children with family members struggling with a SUD are among the first to feel it’s devastating impact. And when they lose these family members, the grief can be additionally burdensome. These children often carry guilt and shame, believing they are at fault for the disease and convinced they should have prevented the death somehow. Despite this, these children are often the last to receive support, acknowledgment, or help, if at all. These children are left to navigate these challenges without the compassionate interventions they need. Especially during the holidays, reach out to a child who has lost a family member this year and help them. NACoA can help, with its resource: Support for Grieving COAs. https://nacoa.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Support-for-Grieving-COAs.NACoA_.pdf?fbclid=IwY2xjawGsQU1leHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHQo8SLq_W2X7XuPoTRKmTq716UwvTSaAoiimYkSzO-fjGb6fcEUmFppPxw_aem_dSM2VVKE1e519e8yfALwCQ

A gentle reminder this holiday season: If you grew up in a home impacted by a parent’s alcohol use, you may have learned to put others’ needs before your own — becoming the peacemaker, the fixer, the one who “holds it all together.”

But you don’t have to do it all. Not this year. Not anymore. Setting boundaries, saying no, and protecting your time and energy isn’t selfish — it’s healing. Boundaries are a sign of growth, not distance. A reflection of how far you’ve come.

Use this Circle of Control as a gentle guide. Focus on what’s within your control. Let go of what isn’t. You deserve peace, too.

Some like Graham are even dealing with the grief of losing a parent to the disease of addiction. This holiday season, even the smallest act of giving can have a big impact.
