This Black History Month, we honor the strength, brilliance, resilience, and contributions of Black individuals—past and present—whose lives, labor, and leadership have shaped our communities and our collective healing.

At Grey Matter Counseling & Consulting, we recognize that mental health does not exist in a vacuum. It is deeply connected to history, culture, identity, and lived experience. We remain committed to creating a space where Black voices are heard, affirmed, and supported, and where healing is rooted in respect, understanding, and equity.

Today and always, we celebrate Black history, Black joy, and Black futures.

🌈 What does affirming therapy really look like?

In our latest blog post, written by Grey Matter Counseling & Consulting therapist Edward Yaeger, we explore what it means to truly support the LGBTQIA+ community in therapy. From creating safety in the room to honoring identity, lived experience, and trust, Edward shares a thoughtful, human-centered look at affirming care in practice.

This isn’t about checking boxes or using the “right” language — it’s about showing up with curiosity, humility, and respect, every single session.

We’ve been reflecting on this past year.

The moments that felt steady.
The ones that knocked the wind out of us.
And all the times we told ourselves, “I’ll deal with that later.”

We also know therapy often sits in that same space for a lot of people. Not because it isn’t helpful — but because it can feel inconvenient, expensive, awkward, or like one more thing to fit into an already full life.

And honestly? Those concerns make sense.

Starting therapy takes time. It takes money. It takes energy. It asks you to show up and talk about things you may have been carrying quietly for a long time. That’s not nothing.

But we’ve also seen what happens when people finally give themselves permission to try. When they stop waiting for the “right” moment and choose support anyway.

That’s why we’re hosting an Open House on January 24th — to make that first step feel a little easier.

No pressure.
No expectations.
No commitment required.

Just a chance to meet our therapists and practitioners, see the space, ask questions, and get a feel for whether Grey Matter might be the right fit for you — casually, on your own terms.

🌟 Meet the Team: José Rosado, LCPC, NCC, MBA

To finalize our Meet the Team series, we’re highlighting José Rosado, owner and therapist at Grey Matter Counseling & Consulting who is deeply inspired by therapy and committed to helping others heal.

José works with adults and young adults, offering thoughtful, affirming support for those navigating neurodivergence (including ADHD, autism, and executive functioning challenges), ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, men’s issues, and career burnout or major life transitions.

💬 “I know what it’s like to think something’s wrong, but not know what’s wrong. How nice it is to find someone who understands you — who gets you.”

José’s approach centers on helping clients feel understood, supported, and empowered as they move through uncertainty and change.

This year, we’re choosing intentions over resolutions.

You don’t need to become a new person in January.

You’re allowed to move into the new year as you are—with care, curiosity, and compassion.

✨ Intentions aren’t about fixing yourself. They’re about listening to yourself.

What’s one intention you’re carrying into the new year?

🌟 Meet the Team: Edward Yaeger, Therapist

Today we’re spotlighting Edward Yaeger, whose path to becoming a therapist was anything but traditional — and that’s exactly what makes his work so powerful.

Before entering the mental-health field, Edward built a career in marketing, business development, consulting, and strategic advising. Seven years ago, he took a leap of faith toward something that felt fundamentally worthwhile — helping people heal.

He describes therapy as “both an art and a science — and also neither,” a space that keeps him fascinated, humbled, and motivated.

Edward’s style is interpersonal, interactive, and grounded in human connection. Working primarily via telehealth, he hopes clients feel seen and heard from the very first session.

He works with high-achieving adults navigating major life transitions, mood disorders, trauma-informed care, s*x and s*xuality, and integrative specialty needs. For Edward, progress matters — but even a small expression of appreciation from a client gives him chills.

His guiding philosophy?

“Life is about minimizing regrets and maximizing integrity.”

🌟 Meet the Team: Munisa Juma, Therapist

This week we’re spotlighting Munisa Juma, a compassionate clinician whose path to counseling began while volunteering in a refugee camp — where simply being heard showed her the power of connection and healing.

With an international and culturally informed background, Munisa blends Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) to support clients, especially those navigating trauma and PTSD, helping them understand how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors interact with care and presence.
She also volunteers providing pro bono support for refugees and asylum seekers, and when she’s not in session, you’ll find her tending to her garden.
