I start this post with a heavy heart and a heavy sigh...the āhere we go againā sigh. Once again, our nation is gripped by the horror of another senseless school shooting. At this writing, 14 elementary students and a teacher are reported dead. 14 children.
While the politicians and talking heads start ramping up their respective talking points to argue for or against gun control measures, or any other possible solutions to keep mad individuals from taking innocent lives, the rest of us will wait. We wait for the powers that be, the ones who we entrusted to protect us and our kids. We pray that they will take action, action that may not eliminate, but will certainly reduce, the likelihood of something this evil taking the lives of those we love.
Likely, this is what will happen. There will be a lot of argument. All sides will produce points or ideas, and some may be good. Some will not. And while the arguments may produce a few changes, good or bad, it will take a while. Some ideas may work and some will be bad ideas. Time will tell.
In the meantime, hereās what I know. Until the resolution to these social problems become clear, we are wasting timeā¦and risking lives. There are things we can do right now while the debates rage on. There are things we can do to protect our children. Do I need to say it again? PUT A TRAINED, ARMED OFFICER OR SECURITY AGENT IN EVERY SCHOOL. Thereā¦we all heard it again.
Nearly every retired or retiring officer has active shooter training now. Iād be shocked to find one that hasnāt. Many of these men and women are looking for post-retirement jobs, full-time and part-time. Add in the thousands of former military, and the trained security officers. The resources are there.
So why hasnāt it happened? Every time one of these tragedies hits us like this, or we have a near-miss that was averted, the talk starts up. Some money is given to local jurisdictions to ābeef up the security.ā Some more school resource officers are given.
But itās never quite enough, is it?
Soon, we hear the same excuses. I have written letters to law enforcement agencies, to our sheriff. I have met with political leaders and community activists. I spell out what we can do and how we can do it. I know what Iāll hear. āGreat ideas.ā āLetās planā¦letās talk.ā Blah, blah, blah.
You know what Iāll hear next? āWe donāt have the support.āāWe donāt have the man-power.ā āWe donāt have the money.ā Pardon my language, but, āBullsh*t.ā I know enough to know that we could do it. As an owner of a security company, I know that I could have trained agents in every school by the start of school in the Fall. As a previous trainer in law enforcement, I know that we could coordinate private security training with local law enforcement to ensure continuity. I know that it could be done. But itās just not quite enough of a priority, is it, Politicians?
This country can send $40 Billion (with a āBā) to Ukraine, but we canāt spend a few million ( with an āMā) protecting the kids. Nahā¦we have other priorities right now. We need new equipment, new programs, new freaking buildings! We donāt have the man-power. We donāt have the money. Whatever! Iām not listening to you political con-artists anymore.
Iāll keep shouting. Iāll start writing more. Iāll encourage others to start calling you out. Iāll cry for our kids and innocent victims some more.
And for now, Iāll keep sighing.
Arm the damn schools!
