An environmentally sound burial option and a natural return to Mother earth Families may wish to choose home funerals and memorials or graveside services.

La Puerta Natural Burial Ground provides low cost, environmentally sound, alternative burial sites for families in New Mexico. A natural (green) burial is a traditional burial and is sanctioned by state statutes. The washed body is returned to the earth wrapped in an organic blanket or burial shroud or is placed in a pine casket without the use of embalming chemicals. The burial site is recorded with GPS coordinates, the surface is restored, and a native plant or stone may commemorate the site. Funeral and memorial services may be held as customary in one’s church, synagogue, mosque, or temple. Families have the legal option to prepare a loved one's body for natural burial as well as transport the body to the burial site. La Puerta staff can provide education and guidance. The use of a traditional funeral home that agrees to follow the guidelines of La Puerta Natural Burial Ground is also an option. La Puerta Natural Burial has dedicated a separate section of the natural burial site for pets; assuring respectful, affordable, and environmentally-sound burial for all creatures.

Wildlife Wednesday!

A few weeks ago, we got a special surprise in the parking lot of La Puerta Natural Burial Ground. This little Desert Box Turtle was just cruising home to rest for the day. We are so excited that these special little creatures call La Puerta home. Please be respectful to all wildlife and give them plenty of space if you are lucky enough to encounter them while visiting La Puerta.

We understand many people choose cremation for a number of reasons. We also offer a final resting place for cremains through our urn plots. All urns must be biodegradable, and families can choose to plant a native plant or have a natural stone headstone to mark the gravesite.
