Decreasing Inflammation to decrease chronic pain.
The slower your body processes sugar the better it can fight inflammation. Foods with a high glycemic index are associated with increased inflammation and pain. Examples of foods that are high on the glycemic index are white bread, rice, cereal, beer, potatoes and processed food in general. Try eliminating these foods and eating more foods that have a low glycemic index such as fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and whole grains. Also, try to get a balance of both Omega 3 foods- cold water fish, avocado, walnuts and olive oil; and Omega 6 foods - seeds and nuts. Try making these changes to your diet for several weeks and see if your symptoms improve!

Inflammatory pain is the spontaneous hypersensitivity that happens with tissue damage and inflammation. This could be due trauma, surgery, or an autoimmune disease. When the tissue is injured there can be swelling and the release of substances that irritate the nerves and cause pain.
Chronic pain is defined as pain that lasts longer than six months from the time of the injury. Pain signals can remain active in the body for months and even years after the injury has healed. Chronic inflammation can contribute to this ongoing pain.
Chronic pelvic pain can be due to ongoing inflammation and a hypersensitive nervouse system.
Diet and exercise can help reduce chronic pelvic pain symptoms.

August is National Breastfeeding Month

Why Breastfeed?
There are many benefits breastfeeding provides for both you and your baby!

Among them:
*Lactation hastens the return of your uterus to its normal state
*The hormone oxytocin produced during nursing promotes
mother and child bonding and can help with relaxation
*Lactation is associated with lowering the rates of Type 2
diabetes, certain types of breast cancer and ovarian cancer
*Benefits for your baby - compared to formula feeding, breast feeding reduces the
incidence of allergies, ear infections, lower respiratory infections, indigestion,
diarrhea, SIDS and type 2 diabetes

Breastfeeding is also cost effective and convenient. Human milk is readily available and at the right temperature. No formula preparation and no bottle and ni**le washing. As your baby grows the composition of your milk changes to meet you baby's nutritional needs!

If you and your baby are challenged with having a positive breastfeeding experience, there are many resources available to you! Check with your local hospital for lactation specialist, many Doulas are also certified lactation specialist; you can also contact the La Leche League.
Check these websites for resources: www.dona.org, https://lllusa.org/MENH/Maine

Here a few tips to avoid neck, shoulder and back pain while nursing your baby: As you settle in to your nursing position check in with your body and become aware of where you are holding tension. Are you hiking up your shoulder while cradling your baby? Try supporting your arm and your baby with pillow so you can relieve the tension in your neck and shoulder. Are you feeling low back strain or pain? Place a small pillow at the curve of your lower back. Switch up the positions you nurse, try reclining or side-lying!

If you are experiencing neck, shoulder, or back pain associated with nursing, carrying or lifting your baby, a physical therapist can help! With education, manual therapy and the correct exercises your pain can be resolved. Contact me and we can work together to help you be pain free!

It's not uncommon to restrict your fluid intake in order to avoid having to p*e! However, you may actually be making things worse by using this strategy. When you decrease your water intake this causes your urine to become more concentrated which can irritate your bladder and cause urinary urgency. If you are not drinking the recommended amount of water, increase your intake gradually. At first you may notice the number of times you p*e increases. But hang in there and don't get discouraged! It may take a couple weeks for the recommended water intake to restore your body's fluid balance. Some benefits of increasing your water intake and staying hydrated are: body temperature regulation, increased energy, enhanced exercise performance, improved metabolism, improved memory and cognition, mood stability, boosts immune system, joint protection and pain relief, bowel regularity and stool consistency.

Do you find yourself needing to run to the restroom frequently?

You may just need to decrease or eliminate common bladder irritants such as coffee, citrus fruits, alcohol and tea; and increase the amount of water you drink. If you make these changes and your symptoms persist, you need to see your healthcare provider for the appropriate treatment.

Pelvic Physical Therapy what's that!?!

As a Physical Therapist who specializes in treating pelvic health conditions I often hear from my client's on their first visit that they "didn't know such a thing existed" and "why didn't anyone tell me about it?".

Physical Therapists with advance training treat many pelvic conditions including pelvic pain, pain associated with sexual activity, urinary and f***l incontinence, urinary frequency and urgency, constipation, pre and post-urogynecological surgeries, pre and post-prostatectomy, pregnancy and postpartum care.

Don't hesitate to discuss these issues with your Health Care Provider and ask for a referral to a Physical Therapist who specializes in Pelvic Rehabilitation. If you have questions, feel free to contact me at (207)852-6868 or otmpt@gmail. I would be happy to answer your questions!

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the tissue lining the uterus is found growing in other parts of the abdominopelvic cavity. Endometriosis lesions can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, appendics, bladder, intestines, colon and re**um.

What are the symptoms of endometriosis?

Endometriosis affects an estimated 10% of women during their reproductive years from the onset of menstruation to menopause. Common symptoms are pelvic pain associated with ovulation, menstruation, and sexual in*******se. Other symptoms include diarrhea, constipation, abdominal bloating, heavy or irregular periods and fatigue. Infertility is estimated to occur in 30-40% of women with endometriosis.

How is it treated?
The gold standard of treatment is excision surgery. It is a must to have a gynecologist who specializes in treating endometriosis to provide the best care and outcomes. Additional treatments to manage on going symptoms may include Physical Therapy, Hormone Suppression, Diet Modification, and NSAIDs.
