In 2025, Pen Bay and Waldo Hospitals worked to successfully redirect recyclables and food waste from the trash. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) there is a 78% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions when food waste is composted rather than sent to a landfill. This effort included process improvements, staff training, awareness campaigns, and recycling champions across departments. Together, we’re driving impactful local sustainability initiatives. Members of our Community Health team recently picked up nearly 4,000 pounds of food from Good Shepherd Food Bank to help stock the “help yourself” shelves located across our campuses in Knox and Waldo counties. This food will help supplement the supply that is generously donated by our partners at AIO Food and Energy Assistance and Belfast Soup Kitchen, who keep our food shelves stocked year round. Pictured here, the team packed “Sugar,” a 2024 Chevrolet Trax that was donated by Quirk Chevrolet GMC of Rockland to help the team expand access to care in underserved and rural areas. Thank you to AIO, Belfast Soup Kitchen and Good Shepherd Food Bank and to Quirk Chevrolet GMC of Rockland for partnering to take care of our communities!
