“Sometimes it’s just about better body mechanics.” — Dr. Karen Kowenski

From adolescents to adults, pelvic floor issues like prolapse and urinary leakage are common but NOT normal—and they’re definitely not something you have to live with.

In this Katie Couric Media article, Dr. Karen Kowenski of Empower Yourself PT shares real-life insights into how small lifestyle shifts—like posture, movement patterns, or even how you sit on the toilet—can make a big difference in pelvic health.

💪 What Is a Pelvic Floor Muscle Contraction?

A pelvic floor muscle contraction—often called a kegel—is when you intentionally engage the muscles that support your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs.

These muscles sit like a hammock or sling at the base of your pelvis. When you contract them, you're lifting and tightening those muscles.

But here’s the key: it’s not about squeezing your thighs or holding your breath—it's about finding and isolating those deep pelvic muscles.

We asked our team to share their favorite cues to help contract the pelvic floor.

Here's Dr. Sima's favorite cue 🥤

Why does pelvic floor relaxation matter?

Your pelvic floor muscles do so much to support your bladder, bowels, sexual function, and even your posture. But when these muscles are too tight or unable to relax properly, they can become a hidden source of discomfort!

And that’s where pelvic floor physical therapy comes in. Through breathwork, manual techniques, and more, PFPT helps you retrain your muscles to let go and release tension.

Dr. Karen shares her favorite cue to help you relax your pelvic floor muscles! Struggling with a tense pelvic floor? Reach out to make an appointment today!

A lot of people think pelvic floor PT = Kegels. But here’s the thing: if your pelvic floor is already tense or tight, contracting it more (aka doing kegels) can make things worse!

Think pelvic floor PT means kegels? Not so fast!

Here’s the thing:
If your pelvic floor muscles are already tight, tense, or overactive, adding more contractions (aka kegels) can actually make things worse—not better.

Overactive pelvic floor muscles can contribute to:
🚽 Urgency or difficulty emptying your bladder
💩 Constipation or painful bowel movements
😣 Pelvic pain, discomfort with intimacy, or pressure

In these cases, the real work isn’t about tightening—it’s about releasing.

Not sure how to relax your pelvic floor?

We asked our team of pelvic floor PTs to share their favorite imagery and breath cues to help soften and let go. Here's what Dr. Sima had to say!
