Twenty years ago, I lived in Peru as a Peace Corps volunteer for over two and a half years.

I learned the language, the culture, and what it truly means to serve a community. Together we worked on environmental projects—organic gardening, planting trees, recycling, clean water education—and I had the privilege of teaching English to children and families who welcomed me as their own.

That experience shaped me deeply. It confirmed what I already felt in my hear and it ultimately led me to become a speech-language pathologist.

This week, I returned to Peru and reunited with the family who took care of me all those years ago. We shared stories, laughter, tears, hugs, incredible food, and rang in the New Year together.

Most importantly, we honored and remembered my Peruvian grandfather, who passed away in September. His love and presence were felt in every moment.

Peru will always be part of who I am. 🤍
