March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day 💙💛
In primary care, we have the privilege of caring for people with Down syndrome across every stage of life: children, teens, and adults. And while Down syndrome may appear in a chart as a diagnosis, the people we care for are so much more than that.
Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, which is why World Down Syndrome Day is recognized on 3/21. But beyond the genetics are individuals with personalities, goals, families, and full lives.
As healthcare providers, our role isn’t just to manage a diagnosis, it’s to support the whole person, advocate for inclusive care, and recognize the unique strengths each patient brings.
This World Down Syndrome Day, let’s remember: they are not just a diagnosis. They are children, adults, friends, siblings, and members of our community. And they deserve care that sees them as the people they are. 💙💛
