Children with OCD may be very distressed by the thought of a parent or other authority figure being “mad at them”. But, frustration and disappointment are regular parts of healthy relationships. It is important for children to learn to tolerate another person feeling upset. Differentiating between a temporary emotion and a constant state of acceptance and love is key.

Calmly explaining that emotions come and go while your care for them remains steady can reduce repeated questions and help them manage uncertainty around relationships.

Instead of trying to address every behavior at once, choose one specific skill, behavior, or time of day to focus on. Practice it consistently, observe the results, and adjust as needed. Once you and your child are comfortable, move on to the next skill.

By breaking challenges into manageable steps, both you and your child can experience success and build lasting habits. Progress happens gradually and patience is key to long-term growth.

OCD often convinces us that checking over and over is the responsible thing to do. The reality is that excessive checking is a sign your brain is stuck in a loop of doubt. True responsibility does not mean eliminating all uncertainty.

ERP helps you learn to trust your first actions, tolerate doubt, and move forward without getting caught in repetitive behaviors.

Over time, this practice strengthens confidence in yourself and shows that doubt does not equal danger.

Anxious kids often worry about loved ones and imagine worst-case scenarios.

Constant reassurance can feel like a quick fix, but it can also keep the anxiety cycle going. A better approach is to validate their feelings, but let them know that adults can handle emergencies.

Strong-willed children are learning to express themselves and assert their independence. When parents respond with tight control or constant correction, it often backfires and increases conflict.

Instead, provide choices and boundaries that allow your child to practice decision-making safely. Supporting their independence teaches problem-solving, builds self-confidence, and reduces daily struggles. Letting go of some control does not mean letting go of guidance; it means helping your child grow in a healthy way.

Avoidance might feel like protection in the moment, but it actually feeds OCD’s power over time.

Every time you avoid a trigger, the brain learns that anxiety equals danger.

Through Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), you can gradually face the things you fear and teach your brain a new lesson: you can handle discomfort, and nothing terrible happens. Each step toward what you’ve been avoiding is a step toward freedom.

Parenting is hard! When partners disagree about discipline, schedules, or expectations, it can be stressful. But when parents approach conflict with empathy and teamwork, kids feel more secure — and relationships grow stronger.

Intrusive thoughts can feel upsetting and even scary for children with OCD.

It’s natural for parents to want to reassure their child that they’re okay, but repeated reassurance can unintentionally reinforce anxiety.

A more effective approach is to help them understand that thoughts aren’t facts and don’t define them.

Let your child know it’s normal to have strange thoughts, and provide calm reminders that they are safe and loved.

Over time, this helps kids separate themselves from the worry and reduces distress.

Children pay close attention to what we say and do, and they quickly learn whether they can trust us. Following through on your promises, consequences, or rewards teaches them that your word matters. If you tell them they can play with a toy after dinner, make sure it happens. If a rule is broken, calmly enforce the consequence.

Over time, this builds respect, trust, and a strong foundation for communication. Consistency in what you say and do shows children that they can rely on you, which strengthens your relationship and supports their emotional development.
