⚠️ Could that mole be more than just a mole?

Your skin can reveal early warning signs of cancer long before a diagnosis. ☀️ Megan Rogge, MD, a dermatologist at , shares the ABCDEs of skin cancer, a simple self-check tool that can help you spot early signs. 🔎 This screening tool looks at shape, color, size, and more to find a potential red flag.

Early detection matters especially for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

“When you’re checking your own skin, you’re already staying aware of your health and helping identify problems early,” said Rogge.

Semaglutide weight loss injections are transforming the way we fight obesity, but behind the hype lies a powerful truth. 💉 These GLP-1 drugs help control hunger and cravings by mimicking a natural hormone, but they’re not a quick fix. Long-term use is often necessary to maintain weight loss.

“The medication supports physiology, similar to how high blood pressure or diabetes medication works. When you take that support away, your physiology is going to go back to what it inherently does on its own. In the case of obesity, the body is likely to regain weight,” said Deborah B. Horn, DO, MPH, the medical director of the UT Physicians Center for Obesity Medicine and Metabolic Performance.

David Fish, an active 77-year-old, was living a normal life until a sudden, temporary loss of vision in one eye signaled something far more serious. Months later, during a routine follow-up appointment, he casually mentioned the incident, unknowingly setting off a chain of events that would ultimately save his life. 🩺

His doctor, Carman H. Whiting, MD, a family medicine specialist at , immediately recognized the red flag and ordered vascular scans, revealing that both of David's carotid arteries were dangerously blocked, putting him at high risk for a stroke.

Referred to vascular surgeon Sheila M. Coogan, MD, David underwent two life-saving procedures, restoring blood flow and preventing future strokes. Now, he’s back to work, doing well, and deeply grateful to his UT Physicians care team for recognizing his symptom and providing swift, coordinated treatment. 💙

“I knew I was in excellent care,” David said.

Persistent headaches, forgetfulness, and fatigue might seem like everyday problems, but for some women, they could be early warning signs of a brain tumor. 🧠 Women are more likely to develop benign brain tumors, as hormones like estrogen can fuel growth, especially during pregnancy. However, "benign" doesn’t mean they’re harmless.

Brain tumor symptoms in women can be subtle, slow-growing, and easy to overlook. If you're experiencing symptoms like vision changes, memory decline, or numbness in limbs, don't ignore them. Talk with your doctor. 💭

“Most women won’t notice symptoms until the tumor reaches a certain size,” said Jay-Jiguang Zhu, MD, PhD, a neurologist at UTHealth Houston.

🚨 Ticks are on the rise, and so are the risks. 🚨

Emergency room visits from tick bites just hit their highest levels since 2019, making tick prevention more important than ever. Don’t let their size fool you. Preventing tick bites could save you from weeks (or months) of fatigue, rashes, or even serious illnesses like Lyme disease. 🕷️

Protect yourself and your family by wearing long sleeves, applying DEET or permethrin to clothing, and checking for ticks after outdoor activities. If you’ve been bitten, don’t panic — tick bite treatment starts with quick removal using tweezers and continued close monitoring. 🔍

Stay vigilant, check your skin, and keep your repellents close. 🛡️

“The increased ER visits are most likely due to the combination of increasing tick population and outdoor exposure,” said Rodrigo Hasbun, MD, an infectious disease specialist at UT Physicians Multispecialty — Bellaire Station.
