On Friday, Jan. 12, 1990 (36 years ago today), Ben Taub Hospital transferred 328 patients from the old Ben Taub Hospital to the newly built Ben Taub Hospital via a temporary wooden tunnel connecting the two.
The new Ben Taub Hospital, located adjacent to the original hospital, sits on 11.4 acres of land. It’s six stories contain 755,000 square feet of space, almost double the size of the old hospital.
The $81 million building added more beds and much needed additional emergency capacity. Today, Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital has garnered respect both locally and worldwide as an outstanding acute care facility and an elite Level I trauma center.
