October is Sensory Processing awareness month! Nearly missed it 🩵 Knowing what proprioceptive input is and what dysfunction can look like is incredibly important when navigating mind and body wellness and regulation. Especially in children. Therapeutic massage is an incredibly beneficial tool in supporting the nervous system and sensory processing function! I Am trained and educated in safe touch practices for pediatrics and would love to help support you and your little one on their wellness journey

💪🏼The Proprioception System!

October is Sensory Processing Awareness Month! To help spread awareness, I am sharing a series of graphics about the 8 sensory systems.

The proprioception system is the internal sense of movement and position (body awareness). It helps us know where our limbs are, how much force to use, and how to coordinate our movements. The receptors are in the joints, muscles, and tendons and perceive contraction, stretching, and compression.

You'll notice I included a list of possible seeking behaviors and challenges. This is not intended to be used as a diagnostic tool, but rather for educational purposes. If you have any concerns or questions, please consult with your child's doctor and request an Occupational Therapy evaluation.

Some ways you can address proprioception sensitivities include:

* Weighted lap pads or vests
* Bean bag chair to sit in
* Heavy work activities
* Swimming
* Karate
* Climbing
* Playing in a sandbox
* Carry groceries
* Wearing Lycra
* Chair push-ups
* Dancing
* Washing the car
* Rolling a ball
* Yoga Stretches
* Pillow fights
* Chewing bubble gum
* Using the monkey bars at the playground

I am out of office today for continued education and additional training in Infant and Pediatric Massage Therapy 🦋

Today's training focuses on session safety for pediatric/childhood trauma. I am excited to deepen my knowledge and understanding in this area to provide the most safe, effective, and quality connection/care to my pediatric clients and their families - specifically my foster/Kinship families.

Your therapist doesn't listen to your body with intention? Can't relate.

Even when you say nothing at all, I can hear.

Each client that enters my room is expecting something different. Some like to let go of all the heavy things that have been weighing them down that week by chatting with me the entire session, and others like to lay still in complete silence.

Just know if you need a silent session, its okay. I got you. I still hear you

💜 we know all about sensory processing around here. Our daughter's dx and response to medical massage therapy is what lead me to becoming a therapist myself. I do consults for every new pediatric client so I can carefully construct an inclusive treatment plan designed specifically for them and their needs. Sessions should and will look different for children whom navigate sensory processing disorders. Rest easy in knowing there are therapists who would love to help your neurospicy regulate their nervous system... In my room you are safe to be who you are.

Some children experience the world in a way that feels too much or not enough.

These are signs of Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) – when the brain struggles to organise and respond to information from the senses.

Recognising these signs is the first step to understanding and supporting a child’s needs.
