Alternatives for the Missing 1890 U. S. Federal Census (Updated Quicksheet)

The 1890 United States Federal Census was almost completely destroyed in 1921 by fire and water damage. Only fragments remain. But there are alternative collections that will help us with finding ancestors in the 1880 to 1900 time period between federal censuses.

Get the links to alternative collections that might be helpful, as well as record collection categories that you should search also.

When Were State Birth Records Started and Required (Updated Quicksheet)

If you are looking for birth records, including certificates, you need to know the timing of each state’s requirements. Each state in the U.S. started requiring birth registrations in different years. Generally, some types of records were created before the official state laws, either at the county, city, or town levels. This chart lists for each state when registration was required, when it started at local jurisdictions, and when general compliance with the state law was achieved.

Join Linda Swanson, OGS Librarian, on Saturday, April 18 at 1:00 pm as she highlights some of the OGS Samuel D Isaly Library’s resources regarding the Virginia Military District. This territory was bordered by the Ohio River on the south, the Little Miami River to the west, and the Scioto River on the east and north. Virginia used these lands as payment to Revolutionary War veterans of the Virginia Continental Line. Many people, from surveyors to chain men to business owners who provided supplies, were involved in the process of surveying the land between the 1780s and mid 1850s. Several new abstracts and indexes can help one discover if their relative is mentioned in documents pertaining to the original surveying of the district.

Saturday Showcase is a series of presentations by the OGS staff featuring particular resources of the Library and Archives. They are hosted in-person at the library in Bellville, Ohio.

Had a great 4H Family History Treasure Hunt Clinic today! We always enjoy sharing our love & enthusiasm for genealogy. If you know of a 4H member taking this project who could use some extra help, feel free to reach out to us and we can arrange a work time with specific volunteers!

But for the safety of our volunteers we will close down early for our winter break. I want to thank all of our volunteers for their dedication over the last year. We will reopen on Sunday March 1, 2026. Weather permitting, of course. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
