Miranda and Bella are our Speech Language Pathologists that work daily at Centre Care to provide our patients with therapy focusing helping patients who have changes in swallowing, cognition, or communication. Recently they have both been certified to provide SPEAK OUT! Therapy. They actively treat Parkinson’s patients that live long term at Centre Care or in our community. The SPEAK OUT! Therapy Program helps people with Parkinson’s and other related disorders REGAIN and RETAIN their speech and swallowing. The program, if followed properly according to the exercises set out in the SPEAK OUT! Therapy Program, can improve volume, articulation, breath support for speech, vocal quality, intonation, and facial expression. Patients and families also report reduced drooling and improved swallowing. This highly effective, research-based treatment combines education, individual SPEAK OUT! Therapy, weekly classes, daily home practice, and continuous follow-ups. Once patients enter the program, they remain in it for life. Please congratulate our four friends who have graduated from their therapy program.

In February, Ridgelines launched Telling Our Stories Together, a collaboration between State College Area High School photography students and A Poem in Our Eyes (APIOE), our program serving low-income older adults living with memory loss at Centre Care in Bellefonte.

This past fall, APIOE Teaching Artist Robyn Ryzdy visited Danielle Crowe’s advanced photography class. She gave an overview of this ekphrastic poetry program (writing in response to artworks) and spoke with students about the kinds of images that resonate with the older adults she works with. She also invited them to reflect on their assumptions and fears about dementia. Together, they explored how photographs can help begin conversations with people living with memory loss.

Students were then asked to take photos for the spring semester of APIOE. In April, several high school students will visit the APIOE classroom to work with residents and see firsthand how their photographs are used to write poems.

For Centre Care residents, this exchange strengthens their sense of connection and belonging within the broader community.

In June, we’ll share the photographs and the poems in our annual exhibit at Schlow Library.
