Age should never determine how concerns are heard, understood, or addressed.

Older adults can sometimes encounter assumptions in healthcare or professional settings, such as attributing new or changing concerns solely to age. These assumptions can influence how thoroughly concerns are explored or how options are presented.

For guardianship, it is important to ensure the individual remains at the center of all conversations and decisions. A person-centered approach recognizes that each individual’s experience is unique and should not be generalized based on age.

Practicing person-centered care as a guardian means:
• Supporting direct communication between the individual and professionals
• Asking for clarification when concerns are attributed to age without full evaluation
• Encouraging discussion of all appropriate care options
• Respecting and incorporating the individual’s preferences and lived experience

Ageism affects people across the lifespan. Person-centered care means valuing every individual’s voice no matter the person’s age.

This redesigned series has a second module approaching for which you can individually register. Lesson two includes strategies for understanding the unique needs of each client and taking action using a person-centered approach. During this three -hour training, participants will learn how to get to know clients, build trust relationships, and take urgent actions quickly.

This module is eligible for 2.75 hours of continuing education credits from the Center for Guardianship Certification.
