Understanding Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) eligibility can feel complicated.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) looks at medical and work history to determine who qualifies for SSDI benefits.
Generally, to qualify for SSDI, you must:
- Be between 21 and full retirement age.
- Have worked at least five of the last 10 years and paid F**A taxes during that time.
- Be unable to work in any capacity because of a mental or physical impairment that’s expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.
- Be under the care of a healthcare professional who can confirm the severity of medical condition(s).

Allsup helps you understand how the SSA defines eligibility, what medical and work evidence is most relevant and how your individual situation fits the rules.

You do not have to figure this out by yourself or guess where you stand.

If you are unsure about eligibility, learning how the rules apply to your situation is an important first step.

If you live with glaucoma, you understand how changes in vision can make routine tasks, mobility and job responsibilities more difficult over time. Vision loss can affect how you work, how you move through your day and how you plan for stability.

National Glaucoma Month reminds us of the experiences of people living with the impact of vision loss. When glaucoma limits your ability to work, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) may help support your financial and medical stability. Eligibility is based on how vision loss affects your ability to perform work-related activities, not only on a diagnosis.

Allsup supports people living with vision-related conditions by helping you understand SSDI eligibility and how to obtain the documentation needed to show how glaucoma affects your ability to work. You do not have to manage this process alone.

Disability due to Glaucoma can qualify you for SSDI.

Receiving a denial for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) can feel discouraging, especially when you are already living with a condition that affects your ability to work. It helps to know that most initial SSDI applications are denied, even when a person meets key requirements.

Denials often happen because medical records are incomplete, work history details are unclear or the impact of your condition on daily functioning is not fully documented. A denial does not mean your condition is not serious or that your situation has reached an end point.

Many people who are approved for SSDI receive approval later in the process rather than after the first application. Understanding common reasons for denial can help you approach next steps with more clarity and confidence.

It’s a common concern:

“Will a financial gift or family support affect my SSDI benefits?”

Short answer: no, but still double-check to make sure.

Cash gifts, help with bills, inheritances or other financial support from family and friends are generally treated as “unearned income” that is irrelevant for SSDI, so they do not reduce or stop your SSDI check. SSDI recipients can even have significant assets or receive large one time gifts without any impact on SSDI, because the program has no resource limit and does not count unearned income for eligibility.

Confusion often occurs between SSDI and SSI.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is different: it is strictly need based, and cash gifts and many kinds of in kind support (like someone paying your rent or utilities) usually count as income and can reduce or suspend SSI.

If you are an SSDI beneficiary and unsure about receiving help of any value, we recommend double-checking to be sure. It’s best to consult a specialist, such as a:
- Benefits counselor
- Social Security disability representative
- CPA
- Financial advisor.

Winter can be especially challenging for people living with a physical disability, particularly when chronic pain, reduced mobility or temperature sensitivity are involved.

Here’s some useful tactics to try when it’s cold outside and the pain kicks in:

- Keep your body consistently warm: Cold temperatures can stiffen muscles and joints, slow circulation and trigger pain flares. Small, steady steps can make a big difference.
- Stay as physically active as possible: Movement is one of the most effective tools for managing chronic pain. Every little bit can make a big difference.
- Maintain a consistent pain management routine: Continue prescribed medications, topical treatments and physical therapy routines.
- Stay hydrated and eat anti-inflammatory foods: People often drink less water during the winter without realizing it—but dehydration can worsen muscle cramps and fatigue.

Also: consider talking with your doctor about pain that increases significantly in winter—sometimes a seasonal adjustment to treatment is helpful.

When living with a disability, healthcare is an ongoing aspect of life.

There are constant challenges with accessibility, affordability self-care capability and more. These can add up to prevent you from obtaining or receiving the healthcare you need, or even discourage you from seeking it in the first place.

Where it comes to getting approved for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), healthcare is critically important.
- Have you been seeing doctors and specialists for your condition?
- Have they accurately and completely documented your medical conditions and treatments?
- Have you kept a personal condition journal that helps track symptoms and impact?

If the answer is “no” to one or more of these, the medical evidence you need to get approved for SSDI may be lacking. Worse still, you may be missing out on needed healthcare.

Here are some ways to overcome healthcare accessibility and affordability obstacles:

- Find your community health centers and free clinics.
- Nonprofit hospitals have financial assistance which can reduce or forgive bills.
- Get a pharmacy discount card.
- Connect with paratransit for rides to and from your doctor visits.
- Work with a social worker or case manager (find them at hospitals, clinics, community agencies, etc.).
