Tis the season… for those unwanted winter blues! 😕
As it gets darker earlier and the weather gets gloomier, we don’t get the sunlight and warmth we need. This can cause changes in our mood and energy levels, often times this is referred winter depression or seasonal affective disorder.
Some cases are mild however please note that some cases can be severe, and if you are having extreme symptoms please see a healthcare provider for help.
Below are some simple tips that can help mild cases of winter blues!
-Open your curtains!
Let in as much sunlight as possible during those daylight hours.
-Move your body
Try to move your body purposefully 30mins a day. Dance, stretch, walk, do an exercise video. Physical movement can improve your mood and increase your energy levels.
-Eat healthy diet
It’s important to eat a balanced diet to maintain proper nutritional levels in the body. Increase your veggie intake with all meals and make sure your carbs are high fiber fueled cards When its cold out our body naturally craves comfort foods. Try to find healthy swabs for high carb foods to help curb cravings (spaghetti squash for pasta, cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles). Increase your water intake, and limit high sugar food and caffeine intake
-Supplement
Ask your doctor what supplements may be safe for you. Taking a daily vitamin d and vitamin c tablet may help your body supplement nutrients you are not getting from sunlight. Taking a daily vitamin or probiotic will also help with overall energy levels and nutritional balance.
-Stay social
If you notice you are starting to isolate yourself lean on your support system. Call a friend or family member to chat. Make plans to get coffee or lunch. Join a weekly social group, like an exercise group or a book club.
-Citrus scents and oils
Citrus scents such as orange, lemon, grapefruit have been known to combat depression, boost your mood and energy levels. You can try applying or diffusing essential oils. You could also try citrus scents lotions soaps or even burn a citrus smelling candle.
-Prioritize self care and me time
Self care can look different for a lot of people. Some people like to journal, mediate, or read a book. Some people enjoy bubble baths or pedicures. Other people may like to craft or create something new. Make sure you have an activity you truly enjoy that can help combat your blues.
Most importantly be gentle on yourself! If you have days where you are more exhausted than others or you just cant get off the couch- ITS OKAY. Its NORMAL. Just know you aren’t alone and we are all going through it!
