All right, I’ve spent a full month giving a breakdown of how much I bill each week, so now I wanna give you a better idea of my monthly expenses and true income.

In August 2025, I saw 31 groups, 59 individuals, had three lesson lessons, and 14 cancellations. I worked for a total of 86 clinical hours and took three days off.

My total income this month was $7095.58. Most of that came from invoices, $7062.62, but I also sold some materials earning $32.63, and my savings account earned me $.33 of interest.

The total amount of money I spent this month was $6056.97. My monthly expenses include payroll software for $46, google business for $6.61, rent for $1349, insurance for $31.75, and payroll which includes taxes for $4226.36. I had one yearly expense, which was my CBMT maintenance fee for $80, and a few as needed expenses which included going to the laundromat for $46.35, materials which cost $74 and 63.$4.63 and some new instruments which totaled $196.27.

This means I earned a profit of $1038.61 in the month of August 2025! Where does this profit go? Well, twice a year I take 50% of that profit and write myself a check! Otherwise, it all get saved away to create a nice little nest egg for my business.

Also, I will not be posting regular monthly updates of my money stats as that feels like giving a liiiiiiittle too much away đŸ€Ș but every now and again I want to provide these updates so you get a better idea of what running music therapy practice looks like!

With technology granting us easy information at our fingertips, it makes sense that we’re constantly learning new things that have the potential to make us better therapists and humans. How do we do that (as service providers)? By centering those with lived experience.

Today was the last day that this practicum student was working with me, and before she left she asked if there were any other pieces of advice that I could give to her as she embarks on her internship. I reminded her about the importance of building strong relationships, not being scared of your musicality, and remembering that silence can be golden. But then I really hit home the fact that we need to learn from those with lived experience. They are the true experts, and we need to center their voices, no matter what demographic you work with, as a service provider. And yes, a lot of times this will look like reframing our entire lens through which we practice and you know what? That’s OK! Because when we know better, we have to do better.

ID: two light pink slides. The first says learning and unlearning it’s something that’s constantly happening and all aspects of being a therapist (and a human)! The second slide says I was telling my practical student earlier today how I will look back on goals and objectives that I wrote six years ago and cringe at what I wanted clients to do as we learned from those with live experience (the true experts) we have to unlearn things we previously believed to be true because when we know better we have to strive to do and be better.

Did you know I run all of my client’s goals by them? Even the 3- and 4- year olds? That’s right! Because collaboration is SO IMPORTANT! I might not give them the exact phrasing but will say things like “I want to work on singing together, does that sound okay to you?” And if a client says no? Well then get that goal out of here! Let’s find something they’d be happy to work on with me instead. 😊

Whoa, that’s a lot of sessions! 😅

As previously mentioned, I definitely overbooked myself this summer. We’re taking it day by day, and I’m still feeling good at the end of this Saturday! It’s also important to note that I only work one Monday per month - not every week is a 6 day work week!!

ID: the first light has a background of Elizabeth playing guitar overlay as the Eastside music therapy logo in pink and it says weekly music therapy stats week of July 21 through the 26th daily schedule and amount build the following six pictures go day by day starting with Monday through Saturday and each includes my schedule and amount build. The last page is a weekly total. I saw nine groups 19 individuals for music therapy. One adaptive lesson had zero cancellations zero phone consults worked with three practicum students and made one connection with another music therapist. My total amount bill was $2793. Note this number is not my take-home and does not include credit card fee fees.

We’re almost an entire month into Q3, which means it’s a great time to compare Q2 numbers from last year to this year! While I wish my profit margins could’ve stayed the same, they decreased from last year to this year. This is because I’m paying myself more and spending more on operating expenses. I’ve got money goals and am excited to see how Q3 shapes up with my new, more competitive rates! That’ll give me great insight for the potential for some of those aforementioned goals 😉

ID: a pink background with black text that says “comparing q2 numbers 2024 & 2025” the second picture has the following listed with 2024 being the first number and 2025 being the second; income $17,921.85 and $20,114.15; payroll and taxes $9,173.81 and $12,834.28; expenses $3,943.25 and $5,199.51; profit $4,804.79 and $2,080.23. The third picture says “I made more money but I also spent more money, meaning there was less profit. However, I paid myself more which is a huge win and not something to be taken lightly!”

It’s been a while since I introduced myself
Hey everyone! My name is Elizabeth VanSant and I am a board certified and licensed music therapist living in Washington state. I moved to the Seattle area six years ago right after finishing my internship and don’t have plans to leave anytime soon (sorry Mom!).

I started Eastside Music Therapy in September 2023 after realizing that I could be the change I wanted to see for this incredible profession. I have big hopes and dreams for my private practice, and am so glad you’re on the journey with me!

I work from a neurodiversity affirming lens and love learning from my Autistic and otherwise neurodivergent clients. My sessions are all client led, and I focus on creating a safe space in which each person can feel comfortable being themselves.
