Today was truly special as I had the privilege of leading a private Iyengar Yoga class for two amazing individualsβ€”aged 89 and 81! πŸ§˜β€β™‚οΈπŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ They had a common goal: to strengthen their legs for stability and find freedom of movement in their arms.
After the initial assessment, we delved into gentle shoulder and arm exercises. I emphasized the importance of working safely, taking it slow, and offering gentle reminders. Both of them exhibited incredible motivation, diligently followed instructions, and took well-deserved breaks.
By the end of the class, their eyes were shining with joy, sporting BIG smiles, and moving their arms with newfound freedom. One of them was overjoyed to discover she could now reach her opposite armpit, exclaiming, "Now I can clean!" It's incredible how small victories matter.
Why am I sharing this? Often, we take our legs and arms for granted in our younger years. In Iyengar Yoga, the emphasis on standing poses contributes to strong legs and arms, leading to a robust spine and alert mind. Don't wait until you're 80+ to start your practice.
