At Overlake, we’re proud to be part of a community that cares. 💙

This past year, we’ve been honored to host 947 free classes and presentations — from mental health support and education to seated yoga for seniors and nutrition seminars — reaching 14,487 attendees.

Together, we supported 23 local non-profits, participated in 21 community events, and our providers volunteered 1,392 hours to give back.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, learned with us, and helped us make a difference on the Eastside. Here’s to building a healthier, stronger community — together. 🌟

On Oct. 16, 1960, our community came together to build something extraordinary — a hospital rooted in care, compassion and connection. Today, we celebrate 65 years of growing together and the countless patients, families and team members who made it all possible. 💙

❓ What does it mean to have dense breast tissue?

Mammograms remain the best tool for breast cancer screening and detection. But many women don’t realize that breast density can affect both their risk and how mammograms are read.

We spoke with Steven Scallon, MD, radiologist at Overlake, to answer some common questions:
➡️ Why does breast density matter? Dense tissue can make it harder to spot abnormalities on a mammogram and is linked to a slightly higher risk of breast cancer.
➡️ Who is more likely to have dense breasts? It’s common — nearly half of women over 40 have dense breast tissue. It can be influenced by age, genetics and hormone levels.
➡️ What should I do if I have dense breast tissue? Talk with your provider about your screening options. Sometimes additional imaging, like ultrasound or MRI, is recommended for extra clarity.

Knowledge is power — and knowing your breast density helps you and your care team make the best choices for your health. 💗

This week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that patients who get mammograms must be informed if they have dense breast tissue. We spoke to radiologist Steven Scallon, MD, to learn more about why breast density matters, who is more likely to have it and what steps women can take to pr...

💤 Safe sleep = sweet dreams! 💕
Making sure your baby sleeps safely is one of the most important things you can do as a new parent. Always place your baby on their back, keep the crib clear, and share a room (not a bed). Even small changes can make a big difference in reducing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and helping your baby rest soundly.

Pregnancy is a special time — but it can also reveal hidden health risks.

“Pregnancy acts like a natural stress test for the heart; it can uncover hidden issues with blood pressure regulation, inflammation and vascular function,” says Heidi Nicewarner, MD, Overlake Clinics Cardiology. “Conditions like preeclampsia don’t just affect pregnancy; they offer important clues about a woman’s future cardiovascular risk.”

Preeclampsia often shows no symptoms at first, which makes routine prenatal visits and blood pressure checks essential. Early detection protects both you and your baby.

Learn more about preeclampsia, its warning signs and how to safeguard your health.

May is Preeclampsia Awareness Month, and learning more about preeclampsia—the symptoms and potential risks—can help you have a healthy pregnancy.

❓ Do I really need a mammogram every year?

According to the American College of Radiology, all women ages 40 and older should receive an annual mammogram. Mammograms are the gold standard for early detection —and at Overlake, we see the difference every day: early detection saves lives.

We know your life is busy and full. But making time for your health is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your loved ones. 💗

Here’s what you need to know:
➡️ Why every year? Breast cancer risk increases with age, and annual screenings catch changes early — often before symptoms appear.
➡️ Is it really that effective? Yes. Mammograms can detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, when it’s most treatable.
➡️ How long does it take? Just 20 minutes for peace of mind.

This October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, put yourself first. Schedule your mammogram — or remind a loved one to do the same.

Get answers to the most frequently asked questions regarding screening mammograms, including how a mammogram is performed, how to prepare for it and when to schedule.
