December 23 is the feast of St. John Kanty, our cemetery's patron, but this typically is overshadowed each year by the great feast of Christmas two days later. St. John was born in 1390 in the small Polish town of Kęty and became a university professor as a young man. During his time as a professor, he was known to be kind and generous towards needy students at the university, helping to care for their spiritual, physical, and academic needs, and in fact, all the poor people in Krakow knew of his generosity. Some professors who were jealous of his popularity had him removed and he became the beloved pastor in a small village, but eight years later he was restored to his university post. St. John died in 1473.

St. John Kanty, pray for us.

Just a reminder to our families, the sexton gate on 36th Street is closed during the winter because of its steep incline onto the cemetery grounds. The main gate entrance on 36th Street is open year-round and we welcome you to visit the resting place of your loved ones.

Heavenly Father, we give you thanks for the blessing of our loved ones, especially those who will be missed at our Thanksgiving gatherings today. We ask your peace and comfort to those who are celebrating a first holiday without a cherished friend or family member. We thank you for your great love that unites us wherever we may be today.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

A blessing for today, Veterans Day, from the USCCB.

Lord God, Almighty Father, creator of mankind and author of peace, as we are ever mindful of the cost paid for the liberty we possess, we ask you to bless the members of our armed forces. Give them courage, hope and strength. May they ever experience your firm support, gentle love and compassionate healing. Be their power and protector, leading them from darkness to light. To you be all glory, honor and praise, now and forever. Amen.
