When we are grieving the loss of a relationship, a marriage, a life we built and wanted to continue to build upon, we often wonder, “How long? How long will this hurt? How long does it take for this grief to pass?”

If you fear you will carry this kind of grief around in your heart forever, I understand. But here’s one of the most freeing things my counselor, Jim, taught me: grief is like a river, you have to get in the boat, and let it take you where it needs to go. It will take as long as it takes, and, as grief is often cyclical, it may even cycle around again. Sometimes, it’s just helpful to know that what you’re feeling is normal.
