🚨 If a child or adult with autism is missing, SEARCH WATER FIRST.

💧Water safety saves lives. Drowning is a leading cause of death for children — and for children with autism, the risk is significantly higher. Drowning accounts for more than 70% of wandering-related fatalities.

What Autism Families Should Know:
• Children with autism may be drawn to water — regardless of temperature or type
• Natural water (ponds, lakes, rivers, canals, fountains, wastewater) may be especially appealing
• Use social stories to teach water safety & trusted adults
• Reinforce: never enter water alone
• Use visual schedules to show when water play is appropriate
• Take every precaution to prevent wandering

Visit NAA’s Wandering Prevention resources to learn more. 💙

💧 Did you know water can be deeply regulating for neurodivergent individuals?

Being submerged provides calming full-body sensory input — like a gentle hug — helping reduce anxiety, improve body awareness, and support emotional regulation.

Sometimes therapy looks like floating. 💙

For this months employee training, we discussed anxiety and how it presents in the water for our neurodivergent students. We're happy to share this snippet with you all and look forward to sharing each month with you a little bit about how we work with our kids in the water.

We look forward to a prosperous new year, for us and the lovely kids of WA state. Go seahawks!

Awareness, preparation, and prevention save lives. 💙

💧 Safety starts with awareness. Take a moment to identify nearby water in your neighborhood and note the closest location to your home. Knowing where water is can save precious time in an emergency.

Wandering (or elopement) is a serious safety concern—especially when water is nearby. Drowning remains the leading cause of death following elopement in the autism community.
🔹 Children with autism face a drowning risk 160× higher than the general pediatric population
🔹 In 2024, 91% of U.S. wandering fatalities were caused by drowning
🔹 On average, seven autistic children die each month after wandering or bolting away—most often due to water
Awareness, preparation, and prevention save lives. 💙
