What does a psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner do? Our training allows us to assess, diagnose and treat mental health disorders with psychiatric medication management. Psychiatric medication? That sounds scary right? But understanding how a psychiatric nurse practitioner can help you, learning what the phrase “medication management” means and knowing what to expect with your psychiatric assessment visit may reduce any concerns or apprehension. Understanding this phrase could be one of the most important steps in seeking treatment. Just like your primary care provider does a “physical” assessment we as psychiatric nurse practitioners do a “mental health” assessment through discussion of your past social history, family history, psychiatric history, and keeping in mind any medical issues you may have.
Based on the findings of your “mental health” assessment a diagnosis will be made and a treatment will be decided upon with you the patient. If the treatment plan consists of medications, education on how these medications work, any side effects that may occur and what to expect will be discussed. When a treatment plan is decided upon that includes medications, these medications will be administered for a trial period observing for effectiveness in reducing symptoms. This begins the “medication management”. We observe effectiveness over time and determine if the medication is the right one for you the patient to reach your treatment goals. There may be times when more than one medication is recommended. Everyone is unique and medications effect everyone differently. As with any prescription medications there are potential risks and side effects. Understanding these risks and their benefits will allow you to make an informed decision. Not all conditions require treatment with medications.
If we decide that you would benefit from adding more structured therapy to your treatment plan such as, counseling, cognitive behavioral treatment, or a life coach, a therapist will be recommended to you. I am part of a community of providers that offer different specialty services and resources to optimize your treatment goals.
Close monitoring and re-assessment of symptom relief is included in your treatment plan. Follow up visits include a brief review of symptoms, medication effectiveness and establish if there is a need to alter your treatment plan.
