New update for patients with artificial joints who used to take antibiotics prior to dental treatment: it is no longer recommended or necessary.

The American Dental Association and American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons are in agreement. This change has been long overdue.

Despite lack of evidence to suport this, it is still recommended for patients to avoid routine dental care for 3 months after an artificial joint has been replaced.

Thanks to ADA's advocacy efforts, MetLife is changing one of its policies about payment recoupment that was infuriating.
Up until now, if MetLife overpaid a dentist for anything, it had the right to take the same amount of money from the patient's next dentist.
Imagine the issues our office managers had to deal with, trying to collect payments from our patients' previous providers for overpayments that might have happened years before.

Hello guys,
We know that many of you are without power today. If any of you (existing patients) need to charge their phones or just warm up, please come in the office. We also can offer coffee, tea or hot chocolate. You are always welcome.

Dear patients, we did not loose power. Our office is open. If you have an appointment, come in. If you don’t have an appointment but like to be seen, call us, we’ll do what we can.

Many of you may have read in the news about the study relating colon cancer and a specific mouth bacteria.

The bacteria, (Fusobacterium nucleatum) is well known to dentists, because of its presence in gum disease.

Now, a study found it in half of the colon cancer cases they studied. Scientists speculate that the bacteria is shielding the cancer from the cancer treatment drugs and is responsible for a treatment resistance.

Clearly, more studies are needed. Deeper understanding of the interactions of mouth bacteria and the rest of the body is needed.

However, for those of us that live in the here and now, addressing their gum health can lead to positive outcomes in many seemingly unrelated medical situations. The stakes are too high to ignore it.

Also, for those that are interested, there are quick and easy tests to find out the type of bacteria we have in our mouths. Ask us next time you are in the office.
