Meet Joe Mignella, Funeral Director at Lawrence T. Miller Funeral Home!

A graduate of Northgate High School, Joe went on to attend the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Sciences, where he graduated in 1992. Just one year later, in 1993, he became a licensed funeral director in the state of Pennsylvania—a role he has served in with care and dedication ever since.

Joe brings more than three decades of experience to our team, along with a heartfelt commitment to the families he serves. He is an active member of the National Funeral Directors Association, the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association, and the Allegheny County Funeral Directors Association. He’s also involved in the local community as a member of the North Boroughs Rotary Club, where service and compassion go hand in hand.

When he’s not serving families, Joe enjoys life in the North Hills with his wife, Jen (Schwab), and their dog, Maggie.

Please join us in giving Joe a warm welcome!

Today we reflect on a story that reminds us that we don't need to hide grief. It lives alongside courage, victory, and moments of deep joy.

Ella Toone and Beth Mead, members of England’s Lionesses, recently won the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025. But their win means more than a trophy—it has become a tribute. Both are carrying the loss of a parent, and in their victory, they dedicated it to their “angels in the sky.”

A funeral is more than a ceremony, it’s a meaningful moment of connection, healing, and remembrance.

It offers a space for loved ones to come together, to honor a life lived, and to begin navigating the path of grief with support and compassion. Through the rituals of farewell, we acknowledge loss, express love, and take the first steps toward emotional healing.

At Lawrence T. Miller Funeral Home, we are here to help guide you through this sacred time with care and understanding.

Meet Janice “Jan” Miller Stein, Funeral Director and Supervisor at Lawrence T. Miller Funeral Home, and a name many in our community know well.

Jan was born in Bellevue and literally grew up in funeral service, living in the family home above the funeral home founded by her parents, Lawrence T. and Rosemarie Miller. From an early age, she witnessed firsthand the compassion and care that define this profession, values she still carries today.

A graduate of Assumption School and Northgate High School, Jan went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree from Lock Haven State College, then graduated with honors from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. In 1985, she became a licensed Pennsylvania funeral director and worked alongside her father until his passing in 1996.

Jan has dedicated her life to serving families with empathy and professionalism. She’s a member of the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice and multiple funeral director associations, and helped create a lasting partnership between the Allegheny County Funeral Directors Association and the Highmark Caring Place. Today, she continues to serve on the board of the Highmark Caring Foundation, supporting grieving children and their families.

“Grief is like the falling leaves of autumn - each one a memory, drifting gently, reminding us of both the sorrow of loss and the beauty of love that remains.” 🍂

As we enter the new season, we are reminded that memories rest in our hearts, like leaves that settle upon the earth. In the sadness and beauty lies everlasting love.

We hope you find comfort in the love that never truly fades. 🧡

Today, we pause to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11th, 2001 — mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, friends, and heroes.

We honor the first responders who ran toward danger, the passengers who acted with courage, and the families who have carried their grief with grace and strength.

Though the years have passed, the legacy of unity that emerged in the aftermath endures. In our shared sorrow, we found shared purpose — a reminder that even in the darkest moments, compassion, courage, and community can light the way forward.

Grief is not a one-size-fits-all journey. For some, healing may come through quiet reflection at home. For others, it may involve stepping away—physically and emotionally—to reconnect with themselves and their memories.

This article from Vogue explores the idea of grief travel, and how stepping into a new space can offer perspective, peace, and even a sense of closeness to those we’ve lost.

🦋 Today is National Grief Awareness Day - a reminder that grief is a universal experience, but also a deeply personal one.

Grief doesn’t follow a timetable. It can come in waves, in quiet moments, or when we least expect it. There is no “right” way to grieve, and there is no deadline for healing.
If you know someone who is mourning, your kindness and presence can mean more than you realize. Sometimes, the best support is simply listening, showing up, and letting them know they are not alone.

To all who are grieving: your feelings are valid, your loss is significant, and you are not alone on this journey. ❤️

🌈 Today, we pause to honor the special companions who brought unconditional love and joy into our lives.

Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day is a time to remember our beloved pets who have passed, cherishing the paw prints they left on our hearts.

For many, pets are family. Their absence can leave a deep ache, but their memory continues to bring comfort and warmth.

If you’re missing a furry, feathered, or scaly friend today, may you find peace in the love you shared and the happy moments you carry forward. 💕

When a loved one passes away, friends and family often bring meals to those who are grieving. This gesture is about far more than food—it’s an expression of love, care, and support during an emotionally exhausting time.

Preparing a meal can be one of the last things on a grieving person’s mind. By providing ready-to-eat dishes, friends help lift a small burden, ensuring the family can focus on honoring their loved one and caring for themselves.

These meals are also a way to be physically present—offering a quiet moment to connect, share memories, or simply sit together. It’s a reminder that grief doesn’t have to be faced alone. ❤️
