Severe Weather Outbreak likely today across northern Illinois, eastern Iowa, and southern Wisconsin. All hazards are likely, including several tornadoes, very large hail, and damaging wind gusts.
- After this morning's rounds of storms move through, we will be quiet for the remainder of the morning into early afternoon. A cap will be in place, allowing for significant destabilization to take place. After 2-3pm, a few isolated storms could develop across western Illinois and move east across central and northern Illinois. Models show these being pretty tame, with a cap still holding on. After 4pm, new storms will explode in development across eastern Iowa, and these are the storms to watch for this evening's event. These storms will move east into northwest Illinois and southern Wisconsin after 5pm and east this evening across the area. All hazards, including several tornadoes (some potentially strong) are possible and very large hail. I-80 and to the north have the best chances for severe t-storms today, with areas inside the dashed area on the map having the greatest tornado risk. The most intense storms will exit by midnight tonight, and more non-severe storms could linger into Wednesday morning.
- Today has a very high ceiling, especially across far northern Illinois, eastern Iowa, and southern Wisconsin, for strong tornadoes. The further south you are located especially near and south of I-80, the less risk you have for storms as coverage will be lower the further away you are front the warm front which will be located across eastern Iowa and southern Wisconsin.
