Join Us in Supporting - Unplug with Doug the Slug!

Doug the Slug has been working hard with us at here at Prime and has enjoyed getting outside with some of our staff!

We’re excited to announce our support for Wild Whatcom’s mission to foster lifelong connections to nature. Through their diverse programs, Wild Whatcom provides people of all ages with the opportunity to explore local parks, learn about the natural world, and build strong, connected communities.

In support of Wild Whatcom’s mission, Prime Sports Institute will be collecting donations at our check in area through the end of May. You can also donate at the link in our bio anytime!

This spring, led by Doug the Slug, Wild Whatcom hopes to raise $12,000 to support youth program scholarships, free public school field trips, and free community nature programs. Last year alone, they provided over 50,000 hours of outdoor programming and awarded $93,000 in scholarships!

“Unplug with Doug” is a reminder to all to unplug from the daily grind and spend time in nature. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or looking to reconnect with nature, this fundraiser is a perfect opportunity to get outdoors and help others get outside!

Join us at Prime on Thursday, Jan 2nd at 6pm for a New Years Reset.

Why do a reset?
We rarely take time to reflect and look back at the year that was...before we plow full steam ahead into the next one.

Pause.
Breathe.

- What went well? What didn’t?
- What do you want to stop doing, start doing or keep doing in 2025?

Learn from all the experiences you’ve had this year. What have you learned that you can apply to the upcoming year?

Most of us (myself included) stay so busy moving forward onto the next thing...the next hour, meal, workout, session or fill-in-the-blank.

Give yourself the gift of time.
Make the space for deeper reflection. Insights are gifts.

And doing this “work” with other cool people allows you to hear different perspectives that will spark ideas and inspiration you can’t get when you try to do it all on your own.

Session includes:
- guided reflection on the past year + workbook to take home
- uninterrupted time to decide priorities & set intentions
- space & support for you to choose a Word-of-the-Year
- ways to make this practice more powerful in the year ahead

Plus - it’s fun to learn more about people and hear what word they are thinking of, why they are choosing it and what it means to them.

One word. What’s yours?

The rains cleared for post race massage and Normatec recovery at Lake Whatcom for the BBOP Changeout Challenge race today. Outrigger canoe paddlers went 12 and 18+ miles today and were expectedly tired and sore after. Changeout racing means a person bails out of the canoe and someone pulls themself out of the water up into the boat as it’s moving to take over. Thanks for having our team to help speed your recovery along! (Photo credit: )

Did you know most research on nutrition is based on college aged men? Only recently have researchers begun to study girls and women.
To quote Dr. Stacy Simms, “Women are not small men.”
Girls and women have different nutritional needs on different timelines than boys and men - especially when it comes to sports and recovery.
There’s so many myths, fads, and misinformation about nutrition online and on social media.
Come learn what your athletes need and be better educated to separate facts from fiction.
The next Whatcom Coaches Connection is Thursday, August 15th from 6-8pm at Prime Sports Institue.
Our special guest is Anna Estes, RD of Prime and Woven Nutrition. The info she shares about what your athletes need to perform at their best, stay healthy and recover optimally is evidence-based.
Come learn from an expert and ask questions related to your specific sport.
Join us at Prime Sports Institute on Thursday, Aug 15th @ 6pm. OR join us virtually. Check the link in the profile to register for FREE!
:
These sessions are held quarterly during the year and are open to ALL coaches in Whatcom County from ANY sport or activity at ALL levels.

Today we get to celebrate Liam, our current longest tenured Clinic Aide, and his last day at Prime.
Liam has worked at Prime since the summer of 2022, during which time he has graduated from Western Washington University with his Bachelor’s in Kinesiology, and been accepted to multiple Doctor of Physical Therapy programs (decision pending!).
An avid hiker, biker, surfer, and soccer fan, Liam’s last day comes as he prepares for a month-long trip to Europe where he plans to enjoy a bit of all his favorite hobbies before starting PT school in the fall.
Thank you Liam for all your hard work and service to Prime’s community, and we wish you the best of luck wherever the road takes you!

NEW Class!
Bulletproof Your Back with Kerry and Aidan
Are you ready to move like you mean it?
For years, Prime has treated patients with lower back pain. The common thread with all of them no matter the activity, sport, or level of competition? A lack of the basic foundation of core activation, stabilization, and strength.
Join Prime owner Kerry Gustafson, LAT, ATC, LMT and personal trainer Aidan Fenton as they lead a progressive class that will advance you from the fundamentals of stability through challenging functional movement.
This class is perfect for anyone who is ready to leave a vulnerable back in the past and gain the stability and strength in their hips, core, and back to perform at their best.

Combining regular physical activity, healthy diet, hydration, and sauna sessions can optimize cardiovascular health. Check out these findings and consult your physician if sauna is safe for you. If so, we have a far-infrared sauna available at Prime.

Laukkanen et al in their prospective cohort study of 2,315 Finnish men followed for 20.7 years.
Contrary to limited evidence linking sauna baths to an increased risk of SCD (sudden cardiac deaths), this long-term study conducted in Finnish men reported an increase in sauna bathing habits (frequency and duration) to be associated with a reduced risk of SCDs.

In another prospective cohort study in 1,628 men and women followed for 15 years, Kunutsor et al found that having regular sauna baths (4-7 sessions/wk) compared with 1 sauna session/wk was associated with an approximately 62% reduced risk of incident stroke. The association was similar for stroke subtypes (ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke). There have been suggestions that a combination of regular physical activity and sauna baths may confer more protection on cardiovascular outcomes.

** As always, consult your physician before using a sauna.

Tips From The Training Room: Contrast Therapy

Are you looking for innovative ways to enhance performance and accelerate recovery? After an intense workout, trail running, mountain biking, paddling, or HIIT training, stop by Prime and try out our contrast therapy tubs!
Contrast therapy is a form of hydrotherapy that is performed by fully submerging your entire limb or body in cold and hot water. The repeated change in temperature causes blood vessels to dilate and constrict creating a vascular pumping effect. This increases the circulation of blood into tissues and throughout your body to facilitate recovery from training.
Contrast therapy helps treat edema, stiff joints, acute/chronic inflammation of soft tissues, muscle spasms, and acute/chronic muscle damage. This treatment is most commonly used by athletes to promote recovery and reduce pain or soreness associated with delayed-onset muscle soreness aka, DOMS.
An increase in blood flow leads to the oxygenation of blood that improves healing, limb function, and enhances tissue waste-product transportation which reduces edema.
Common conditions that have been reported to benefit from Contrast Therapy treatment are rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, carpal tunnel syndrome, foot or ankle sprains, and soft tissue trauma.
First start by submerging your limb or body into the hot water for about 3 minutes. The hot water temperature should range from 102-105 degrees Fahrenheit. Then submerge your limb or body in cold water for 1 minute. The cold water temperature should range from 52-56 degrees Fahrenheit. Repeat the process of submerging in hot and cold water three times.
