This week I’ve been busy learning all the new things at the Lifestyle Medicine conference .

The keynote this morning was the latest information about the prevention of Alzheimer’s. And let me tell you, it was a banger.

I’m crushing on hard.

Learning from true experts. The scientists. The people doing the research.

It’s a reminder that Instagram influencers are often just that. Influencers.

I am dedicated to learning more from people like this.

And I’m about to be obsessed with midlife women’s brain health.

I finally got minute to breathe and watched “The M Factor” documentary.

You should watch it.

And your partner should watch it.

And your kids.

And your friends.

We have to stop gaslighting women.

And start to believe them.

If you think you have perimenopausal symptoms and you’re over the age of 40, you probably do.

If your doctor doesn’t believe you, find yourself a menopause specialist.

We are here to help you.

And I’m so proud to be doing this work for you.

Creatine is my new favorite perimenopausal wellness tool.

I guess I shouldn’t say *new* because I started taking it daily back in April.

I have legitimately noticed improvement in my brain fog and focus.

I used to think it was just for bodybuilders.

And even though I *knew* that women could benefit from it, I just didn’t feel that into it.

But I have changed. And now recommend it to all my patients.

Studies show that creatine supports muscle strength.

It can also improve cognitive function, with research suggesting it may enhance memory and mental clarity during this transition.

A daily dose of 3-5g is safe and effective. It is important to take it daily. And it doesn’t matter what time of day.

It is odorless, flavorless powder that easily mixes into coffee (or sparkling water for me).

Perimenopause anxiety can look like:

Worsening baseline anxiety

Worrying about things that have never bothered you (driving, traveling, shopping)

Waking up at 2am with racing thoughts

Intrusive worries

While there is no surefire way to get rid of these symptoms. We know there are a few things that can help:
1. Good quality sleep
2. Radical self compassion
3. Exercise (of course!)
4. Hormone replacement therapy

When my patients start on HRT, they often start to feel better and so they can more easily focus on the lifestyle changes that benefit their mind and body wellness.

During menopause, your estrogen levels drop, increasing your risk of heart disease. One in three women will develop some form of cardiovascular disease after menopause.

Here are three tips to keep your cardiovascular system strong and healthy:

💪 Stay Active: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. Walking is perfect.

🍏 Eat Heart-Healthy: Incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins into your diet. Omega 3's and fiber are important!

🧘‍♀️ Manage Stress: Practice mindfulness, meditation, or any stress-relief technique that works for you.

Cheers to Monday and caring for our hearts and minds this week!

Insulin resistance is a condition where cells in the body become less responsive to the effects of insulin, leading to higher blood sugar levels.

During menopause, estrogen levels decline, which can contribute to the development or worsening of insulin resistance. Estrogen plays a role in insulin sensitivity, so lower estrogen levels can lead to reduced insulin sensitivity.

Insulin resistance during menopause may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, development of visceral body fat ("belly fat") and other metabolic disorders.

Managing insulin resistance through lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight can help mitigate its effects during menopause.

Micronized progesterone is an oral capsule that many women take in addition to their systemic estrogen. For women who have a uterus, taking estrogen without a progestin can increase the risk for endometrial cancer.

A small percentage of women will have side effects from oral micronized progesterone.

Alternatives exist:
- Use the micronized progesterone vaginally
- Try a different type of progestin
- Progestin-containing IUD, such as a Mirena or Kyleena
- Try a combination patch that includes both a progestin and estrogen
- Duavee - an oral capsule containing estrogen and a "SERM" (which acts anti-estrogen on the uterus and breast)

While many women do great on transdermal estrogen and micronized progesterone a few need an alternative.

This is why it's important to seek out a NAMS-certified menopause practitioner. They are familiar with all of the options and can custom tailor your HRT for you.

Up to 80 percent of women experience hot flashes/night sweats, or vasomotor symptoms (VMS), during the menopausal transition, with frequency varying by culture and ethnicity.

While many women describe these symptoms as severe, only about 20 to 30 percent seek medical treatment (wait, WHAT??).

Mild hot flashes/night sweats may occur around menstruation in late reproductive years but often don't require treatment.

Hot flashes and night sweats become more common as menopause progresses, affecting around 40 percent of women in the early transition and increasing to 60 to 80 percent in the late transition and early postmenopausal stages.

Four different patterns of menopausal symptoms exist, each occurring in about a quarter of women, including early onset, onset near the final menstrual period with later decline, early onset with persistently high frequency, and persistently low frequency.

Take home points:
Everyone experiences peri/menopause differently.
And too few women (even with SEVERE symptoms) are seeking treatment!
