To reach the Native and Strong Lifeline, call 988 and dial 4. You can also text N8V to 988 or go to the chatline at 988lifeline.org to be connected with confidential support, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Native and Strong Lifeline now offers even more ways to connect.

As Su***de Prevention Month continues, we want to ensure all our relatives know about this resource.

The lifeline acts as a su***de-prevention, crisis and help line.

Native and Strong serves all Indigenous people in Washington state, and all counselors are Native people, trained to listen and provide support and resources. Their counselors are tribal members and descendants who understand Native cultures and healing.

To reach the Native and Strong Lifeline, call 988 and dial 4. You can also text N8V to 988, or go to the chatline at 988lifeline.org to be connected with confidential support, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

September is Su***de Prevention Month — a time to raise awareness, offer support, and share resources that save lives.

One powerful tool we want to highlight is the Su***de Prevention Safety Plan developed by SAMHSA. It’s a personalized, practical plan that helps individuals recognize warning signs, identify coping strategies, and connect with people and resources when they need support most.

A safety plan includes:
-Recognizing personal warning signs
-Internal coping strategies
-Social contacts who may distract from suicidal thoughts
-Family members or friends to ask for help
-Professionals and agencies to contact during a crisis
-Steps to make the environment safer

Whether you're supporting someone else or navigating your own mental health journey, having a safety plan can be a life-saving step.

Learn more and download the safety plan template here:

Talking Saves Lives

The Columbia Protocol (C-SSRS) is a simple set of questions we can all use to check in with our loved ones who may be struggling. It’s not just for professionals—anyone can use it. These direct questions can open the door to honest conversations about su***de and give someone the chance to feel heard and supported.

In the Lummi community, caring for one another means speaking up when we notice someone hurting. By using the Columbia Protocol with friends, family, or community members, we can:

Create space for open conversations about thoughts of su***de
Show our loved ones they are not alone
Connect them to support and healing resources

You can also download the Columbia Protocol app on your phone to make screening easier and always have the questions ready when you need them.

If someone is at high risk, you can call or text the Lummi Mental Health Crisis Outreach Team at 360-594-1317 for immediate support.

If someone is posing an immediate danger to themselves or others, do not hesitate to call 911.

You can also call or text 988 and press option 4 to connect with the Native and Strong Lifeline, which is dedicated to supporting Native communities.

Together, we can prevent su***de by checking in, listening, and walking beside those in pain.

Words shape how we see people and how they see themselves. When we use judgmental or stigmatizing language, it can:

Increase shame for survivors and families.

Make it harder for people to reach out for help.

Spread harmful stereotypes about su***de.

By choosing life-affirming, compassionate language, we reduce stigma and remind people:
You are not your struggle. You are sacred. You are not alone.
