You may have seen the March 6 Seattle Times article titled “NAMI’s Washington state chapter dissolves amid ‘grievances.’” We want you to hear directly from us about what this means — and what it does not mean — for NAMI Whatcom.
First and most importantly: NAMI Whatcom remains strong, stable, and fully operational. NAMI is a federated organization, meaning each local affiliate is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit with its own board, finances, and programs. NAMI Whatcom is not governed by the state organization, nor are we financially dependent on it for our day-to-day operations.
In 2025 alone, over 2,800 individuals participated in our support groups and education programs, including Family Support Group, Connection Recovery Support Group, and our signature education offerings. These groups continue to provide safe, confidential spaces for people living with mental health conditions and for family members seeking understanding and connection. We will continue offering all of these programs without interruption.
The recent media coverage reflects a multi-year process involving the state organization and does not impact our local operations. Our commitment to Whatcom County remains unchanged: reducing stigma, increasing access to support, and advocating for a stronger behavioral health system.
We are deeply grateful for your trust and partnership. Because of you, NAMI Whatcom will continue to be here — steady, community-rooted, and mission-driven.
Please reach out if you have questions or concerns.
