This month we are shining a spotlight on resident James "Jim" Bertolino!

James Bertolino, born in 1942 in Wisconsin, is a poet and educator who developed an early passion for writing. He earned degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh, Washington State University, and an MFA from Cornell. Over a 36-year teaching career, he taught creative writing at several universities and colleges and contributed to the arts through advisory roles and literary projects.

His poetry has appeared widely in journals and anthologies and has been adapted into music and visual art collaborations. His well-known poem “Wedding Toast” has been used in weddings around the world. Bertolino has received numerous awards and fellowships and served as a poetry judge for the American Book Awards.

In his personal life, he shared long creative partnerships with Lois Behling and later Anita Boyle. Now living at North Cascades Health & Rehabilitation, he continues to enjoy connecting with others and spreading positivity through his love of art and community.

Stop by on a Wednesday afternoon to hear Jim read some of his famous poems to our residents and staff!

🎲Yahtzee!🎲

There’s nothing like a little friendly competition to brighten a rainy day! ☔️

Our residents had a wonderful time gathering for a game of Yahtzee, sharing laughs, cheering each other on, and celebrating some impressive rolls. Activities like this bring everyone together and create moments of connection, fun, and plenty of smiles.

We love seeing our residents enjoying time with friends and making great memories along the way. Who knew five dice could bring so much excitement? 😊

Today we’re shining a light on one of the incredible individuals who makes our community so special. 💙

Marye has called North Cascades home for several years now. You can often find her at the nurse's station listening to music or sharing stories from her life with staff and fellow residents.

Marye spent a lot of time with her grandfather growing up. Her grandfather was a carpenter, and she enjoys commenting on the furniture around the facility and how her grandfather would build similar items. Marye's mother was a midwife, and Marye would assist with deliveries and caring for the newborns after birth. To this day Marye loves children and enjoys making them laugh or smile. Marye had several careers throughout her life, but the one she is proudest of, is raising show dogs. Marye continues to love dogs and her face lights up whenever she sees one visiting our facility.

Marye's favorite foods include chocolate, cookies, and hot chocolate. 🍫 If you couldn't tell, she has quite the sweet tooth!

Marye's favorite activities are coloring, live music, happy hour, and anything that involves getting outside when the weather is nice. ☀️

Long-term care is more than a place to live — it’s home. And our residents are at the heart of everything we do. From sharing stories and life experiences to offering words of wisdom (and the occasional witty comment!), they bring warmth, strength, and personality to our skilled nursing facility every single day.

It’s an honor to care for someone who has lived such a full and meaningful life. In long-term care, we build lasting relationships, celebrate milestones together, and create moments that matter — big and small.

🍀Happy St Patrick's Day!🍀

Today we spent time creating festive St. Patrick’s Day crafts filled with plenty of green, a little sparkle, and lots of creativity. From shamrocks to lucky decorations, everyone had a great time showing off their artistic side and enjoying time together.

We’re feeling extra lucky to spend time with such amazing people! 💚

🥧🍰 Cake or Pie? It’s Time to Decide! 🍰🥧

In honor of National Pi Day (3.14!), we had a little fun in our skilled nursing community by polling our residents with a very important question…

👉 Team Cake or Team Pie?

The votes were cast, opinions were shared, and let’s just say — our residents have strong (and delicious!) preferences! 😄 It was a sweet way to spark conversation, laughter, and a little friendly debate throughout the building.

Moments like these remind us that life in a skilled nursing facility is about more than care — it’s about connection, choice, and celebrating the little things together.

Now we have to ask… which team are YOU on? 🍰🥧👇

BINGO is not just a game around here… it’s a serious sport. 🎉👀

When bingo starts, the focus is real. Seats are claimed early. Lucky charms are in place. And you can hear a pin drop between numbers being called!

Our residents come ready — watching their cards carefully, listening closely, and celebrating every single win. The friendly competition is strong, the laughter is loud, and the bragging rights last all week long! 🏆️

Beyond the fun, bingo helps keep minds sharp, encourages social connection, and brings everyone together for a little midweek excitement. But don’t be fooled by the smiles — when someone yells “BINGO!” it’s all business. 😉

We love seeing our residents so engaged and enjoying every moment. Who’s ready for the next round?

Who says exercise has to feel like exercise? 💪✨

At our skilled nursing facility, we’re always finding creative ways to keep therapy fun and engaging — and lately, the yoga ball has been a big hit!

Residents gather to take turns kicking or pushing the ball — turning strength and mobility exercises into a fun, interactive activity. These simple movements help improve leg strength, coordination, range of motion, and balance, all while feeling more like a game than a workout.

When exercise is enjoyable and purposeful, participation increases and confidence grows. Our team loves seeing residents smile, laugh, and encourage one another while staying active and working toward their goals.

Movement is medicine — and sometimes all it takes is a colorful yoga ball to get everyone rolling! 🟢

🖤❤️It’s Flannel Friday! ❤️🖤

Every Friday, our team brings the cozy vibes by rocking their best flannel looks — from classic red plaid to bold and creative styles. It’s a fun way to boost morale, spark some friendly competition, and bring even more warmth into our building.

The best part? Each week, the staff member with the most fabulous flannel wins our very official (and very tiny) Flannel Friday Trophy! 🏆 The winner gets bragging rights for the week — and the honor of passing the trophy on to the next Friday’s champion.

It’s amazing how something as simple as wearing flannel can bring so many smiles to our residents and staff alike. We love creating moments of fun while continuing to provide excellent care every day.
