It’s not often we in the somatic/disordered eating/Health at Every Size clinician community get wins like this acknowledgment. So I’ll take it. The BMI has always been bs, nice to know there’s starting to be formal recognition of that.

Body mass index has long been a standard, but controversial, measurement of weight and health.

Are you an Associate looking for anti-diet supervision? Join myself, Emily Benedict LMHC and fellow anti-diet therapist Jackie Abeling, LMFT for group supervision! This group focuses on weight-inclusive paradigms, gender-affirming care, social justice-oriented, and totally supportive of you bucking anti-fat systems as a budding therapist.

We’ve got a couple of pricing options to ease the financial burden. You can pay by the session or sign up for a 6-month subscription for a discount. We are based in Bellingham, WA but all group supervision will be online through Google Meet.
Find out more here: https://www.embodiedjourneyspsychotherapy.com/fat-lib-supervision

SIDE NOTE: We’re also looking to provide a more well-rounded supervision experience–and perhaps affinity groups in the future– and we would like to partner with supervisors of varying identities to aid in this effort. If you are interested, click the “Join Us” link on the page above and let us know your interest.

In honor of my client who was pathologized by a medical provider this week for being in a bigger body, I am posting this article again as it's a reminder that Western medicine has a long way to go in offering inclusive care. Not only did this client not receive the help they were there to receive, but now has a resurgence of disordered eating behaviors because this doctor echoed the internalized fat phobia she battles daily in a society entrenched in diet culture. I wish I could say this was a rare case but I hear of it weekly. This level of harm from the people we entrust our medical vulnerability needs to change.

For decades, the medical community has ignored mountains of evidence to wage a cruel and futile war on fat people, poisoning public perception and ruining millions of lives. It's time for a new paradigm.

May all of us, especially white thin bodied therapists who are HAES aligned - read through this and let it be a chance to reflect on ways we have perpetuated or continued harm rather than centered Black folks and fat liberationists.

Six months ago, Dr. Lindo Bacon reached out to the ASDAH Leadership Team about their intent to write a revised Health at Every Size® Book. What transpired has caused a great deal of harm and a heavy burden of emotional labor for our team.

While we have grappled with the specifics of how to respond over the last few months, Marquisele Mercedes’ recent account of her experience with Lindo illuminated that Lindo’s harmful actions were a pattern in the greater community. This knowledge has catalyzed our response. We are in solidarity with Marquisele and others who have experienced harm caused by Lindo.

We want to provide transparency about the conversations and context around our decisions as the ASDAH Leadership Team.

We've posted a full account of the events on the ASDAH blog.

Fellow public-health pros: PLEASE stop inserting fatphobic messages into your communications about COVID-19. is a health risk factor in and of itself, and the last thing we need right now is to be stressing people’s immune systems with discriminatory rhetoric.

The same is true for racist rhetoric. Stigmatizing people based on ethnicity or country of origin is NOT helpful and only serves to create greater stress and reduced immunity in the people on the receiving end. No one is to blame for this virus. We’re all in this together, and we need to take care of each other.
For more on the health effects of weight stigma, check out the paper “An Evidence-Based Rationale for Adopting Weight-Inclusive Health Policy” by Hunger et al. And the health effects of racism: “Racism and health: Antiracism is an important health issue” by McKenzie. Lots more citations in my book, ANTI-DIET.

"When I was recovering, even the smallest act of kindness was like antiseptic on an open wound, I needed it, but it burned. It burned with shame and guilt. When you forget how to accept love it hurts when you finally do. Sometimes you don't know just how bad you felt until you start to feel better, and that can be a tough pill to swallow. You start to realize just how much you have been lying to yourself."

My heart goes out to you for your bravery in retelling your experience of your psychiatric stay. I so appreciate you using your platform to

Mental health famously has a stigma around it. We are more likely to call in sick with a cold, than to say we're depressed. We are more likely to get sympathy for a broken arm, than we are for a bout of debilitating sadness. But we know these things are real and they affect all of us in some form or
