Your nervous system is designed to protect you. It’s very intelligent. That’s why diving into healing trauma can be retraumatizing.
Building a felt sense of safety in the body is step 1. And that takes time. The nervous system will let us know when it feels some safety.
Without safety there is no healing. It can’t sustain it.
Your nervous system rules! Ready to befriend it?

The goal for any successful therapy is NOT to feel neutral about everything.

You are a human being with REAL emotions, so it's unrealistic to have a goal to just feel okay about everything.

If you're alive, then I can promise you that you will feel stress in your life, so an appropriate goal for therapy is to increase your ability to TOLERATE stress.

This is known as EUSTRESS - the healthy amount of stress that helps you build a resiliency and a tolerance to it over time.

DISTRESS, on the other hand, is the type of stress that has a negative impact on you (i.e., traumatic life experiences) that can make daily stressors more distressing.

Therapies that help heal your nervous system, like EMDR Therapy, help process those traumatic life experiences, increase your ability to tolerate stress, and thus change how your nervous system perceives daily stressors from being distressing to eustress.

Questions about how it works? Then check out The EMDR Therapy Progress Journal which explains how the whole process works!
