In honor of the late Travis Walton, we invite you to a special blood drive this Saturday, July 27, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 151 Tremont W, Port Orchard, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Travis was diagnosed with a serious and rare disease in his teens. He received numerous life-saving blood transfusions from local donors that helped him through a liver transplant at age 23 and a kidney and liver transplant in 2004. Despite his challenges, Travis became an inspirational speaker, educating our community about the critical need for blood donations. He also volunteered tirelessly for Bloodworks, alongside his mother, Laurie.

Though Travis passed away in March 2024, his legacy endures. This blood drive is our way of celebrating his memory and continuing his mission to help others.

Most blood centers don’t have enough blood on the shelves to handle mass disasters, leaving the public especially vulnerable in the aftermath of an emergency. Our participation in BERC, and by extension you, are how we fix that avoidable danger. "I began donating years ago as I lived the “charity” principle of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal order dedicated to charity, unity, and fraternity. We are sounding an emergency call urging Type O+ and O- blood donors to come forward to restore the blood supply after dropping to alarmingly low levels.

“While a four or five-day supply is ideal for patients, our community has less than a 24-hour supply in stock of Type O positive – the most commonly transfused blood type,” said Bloodworks NW Co-Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kirsten Alcorn.

When Kristin Kleinhofer's acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) returned, she picked a mantra, a quote by Christopher Reeve: "Once you choose hope, anything's possible." It's this hope, along with the decision made by two families to donate their babies' cord blood and the generosity of more than 90 blood donors, that powers Kristin today.

Meet La Fonda, nominees for the Music’s In Our Blood Community Impact Grant with Sonic Guild and Bloodworks NW for their amazing impact on their community.

Sisters Valerie & Veronica Topacio front the band La Fonda and have made an undeniable impact on their community by creating ‘Belltown Bloom’, a local music festival dedicated to bringing marginalized voices to the front, showcasing womxn and non-binary artists, as well as the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities.
