RESIDENT TESTIMONIAL:
Maurice “Speedy” Livingston is a man whose life has been fueled by hard work, determination, and a passion for racing. Growing up, Maurice worked several jobs before beginning his long-lasting career with LA Times Vehicles in Los Angeles, California, where he worked in the fleet department parking cars in parking garages until retirement. That experience sparked his love for performance cars, eventually leading him to purchase a Porsche Coupe and join a Porsche membership group.
Known as “Speedy” in his racing days, Maurice became one of the top five street racers among his peers and fellow club members. His dream was to race professionally in NASCAR, and despite having little money, he traveled throughout Los Angeles searching for sponsorship opportunities. During that time, Maurice discovered that opportunities in professional racing were limited for men of color. By the time trailblazer Willie T. Ribbs received sponsorships and broke barriers in the racing world, Maurice was already in his 50s and considered too old to pursue the career he had always dreamed of.
Maurice also pursued schooling to become an aircraft mechanic, but he was unable to complete the program after learning he would need to relocate to Seattle, Washington for work, a move his wife at the time did not want to make.
After retiring from LA Times in March of 1963, Maurice moved back to Texas to purchase a home and begin a new chapter of life. Today, Maurice’s goal is to return to his beautiful home and live independently once again, with the support and dedication of the amazing therapy team here at The Atrium.
As Speedy proudly says, “After I learned how to drive other people’s cars in those parking garages, I knew I was unstoppable.”

✨As we are entering graduation season, one of our very own for over 5 years now has made an amazing leap in her career. ✨

Stephanie Hernandez has been an LVN here at the Atrium initially as the staffing coordinator, then transitioned into woundcare nurse, and for the last 2 years she has been our Assistant director of nurses for our bustling and busy short term section. Stephanie pursued her bridge from LVN to RN despite the challenges and adversity while continuing her full time role, working shifts, maintaining her systems, and supporting her team. Last week she walked that stage and completed her Associate degree nursing program. We are so proud of her and her diligence and persistence, next step NCLEX RN!

Congratulations Stephanie!!🥳
