Justin M. Shepherd, PhD is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Houston and Co-Director of the RESTORE Laboratory. Dr. Shepherd has published over 75 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters focused on substance use and the co-occurrence of psychopathology. He has charted a line of work focused on risk and protective factors of addictive behavior in relation to clinically relevant treatment and health-related outcomes. His work aims to elucidate malleable mechanistic factors (e.g., anxiety sensitivity, pain-related anxiety) that underlie relations between substance use and mental and physical health outcomes, with a particular emphasis on conducting empirical work among underserved and vulnerable populations.

He completed his doctoral degree in clinical psychology at the University of Houston, where he was the recipient of a Ruth L. Kirschstein Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award. Dr. Shepherd completed pre-doctoral clinical training at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and McLean OCD Institute in Houston, TX, as well as at McLean Hospital in the Division of Psychotic Disorders with Dr. Julie McCarthy. He completed his clinical psychology internship at the VA Boston Healthcare System.
