Reading Equine Body Language in a Bodywork Session

Reading body language is always important and learning how to read it is just as important as all the massage and therapy techniques I am required to learn. Responding to it accordingly is important in working through tension in the body by showing me areas that are painful or uncomfortable that I am not able to find just by feel.
In the video as I am warming up her muscles you can see the horse is helping me work through the tension by moving with me and is focused on what I am doing. The moments where her head raises and the eyes widen show me where I need to focus on most and do some trigger point work. PEMF can also help me identify and work through these areas in a softer approach if the area is too sensitive for massage.

*Big stretches are always a sign I did something right šŸ˜„

Signs of Tension
Head raise, wide eyes, ears back, tense muzzle, bracing, and movement/ā€œdancingā€

Signs of Release
Lowered head, soft eye, neutral ears, relaxed facial muscles, licking, chewing, yawning, relaxed leg, leaning into pressure and stretching.

In this video you can see that the left side is pulsing whereas the right is not. The pulsing shows that there is sensitivity/inflammation in that area and could possibly be due to the horse compensating for another area of the body (usually diagonally). This can be addressed by spending more time treating the surrounding areas and assessing the rest of the body for further resistance of inflammation.

So fascinating to see how different parts of the horse react to the pulses!
