From one of our faithful volunteers:
Why Volunteer?
Sometimes I am asked why I volunteer at the Body of Christ Community Clinic. I must say, that for me, there are several reasons.
“Don’t you have anything better to do?”
Actually, no. In all honesty, I love these patients. We change lives at BOCC. I suppose that I could stay home cleaning. (Probably wouldn’t.) Our patients depend on our care, and we do care. It is impossible to be in a bad mood at BOCC. We see patients bound to addictions. Patients come in as their last hope. Patients in the throes of depression. They are sure that no one cares, that there is no way to overcome their situation. I keep remembering:
Isaiah 60:1 (Amplified) “Arise from the depression and frustration in which circumstances have kept you-rise to a new life! Shine be radiant with the glory of the Lord, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you!”
Reflecting the glory of Christ and reminding the patients that there is hope and a way out of their situation is our task. They can reach their individual optimal health. Most importantly, they are loved.
Therefore, the answer to the question is “No, there is nothing else that I have to do that is more important than volunteering at BOCC.”
“Do you really think that you make a difference in the clients’ lives?”
Regularly, patients come into the clinic and are diagnosed with Hypertension, Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, suspicious skin lesions, and various other maladies. I have seen patients come to our clinic and be sent immediately to an Emergency Room with life-threatening diagnoses. Patients have come in crying and needing prayer. We serve these patients and attempt to be the “hands and feet” and the voice of Christ. There is no better calling. If not us, who? With Christ’s help, we make a difference.
I have a theory that just as God wants 10% of our finances, He also wants 10% of our time. That equals about two and a half hours of our time per day. Do you set aside at least 17.5 hours each week to serve the Lord? I count my time at BOCC as part of my “time tithe.” The time spent there blesses me much more that it blesses our patients. We are always looking for people willing to serve. Perhaps God is encouraging you to use your gifts in His service.
