Put down the flashcards. Honestly.
I know you want to help your child find their words. I see parents buying the kits and the cards, hoping this time they’ll stick. But here’s a secret from 25 years in speech therapy: your kitchen table is a better classroom than any deck of cards.
Why? Because flashcards are a "test." Snack time is a "connection."
Think about the Snack Time Hack:
1. Choice-making: Hold up two options. "Apple or cracker?" You’re giving them a real-world reason to communicate.
2. Natural repetition: You don't have to force it. "More?" "Open?" "Yum!" It happens naturally.
3. Zero pressure: It’s just food. There’s no right or wrong answer, just a shared moment between you and your child.
Routine is more powerful than intensity. It’s not about an hour of "work": it’s about these tiny, functional windows throughout your day. There's nothing wrong with flashcards and I do use them. However, natural interaction trumps "set up" circumstances everytime!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the "exercises," take a breath. Start at the table.
