Muscle cramps and spasms are no joke. They always seem to hit at the worst time! ⚑️

A spasm is an involuntary muscle contraction, and there are a few common reasons why they happen. Three common causes include nutritional deficiencies, ischemia, and exercise associated cramping. Deficiencies in minerals like magnesium and calcium are very common and contribute to muscle cramps. It's a good idea to check in with your primary care provider to see if you might be deficient in these areas. Ischemia happens when a muscle is suddenly or gradually deprived of oxygen, often due to restricted blood flow. When this happens, lactic acid can build up in the affected muscle and surrounding muscles, leading to discomfort and tightness. Massage can be extremely helpful by relieving tension, reducing restriction, and improving oxygen blood flow to the area. Exercise associated muscle cramping typically occurs after a strenuous workout.
