Living in North Dakota and Minnesota means we know cold โ and so do your hot tubs. The good news? Your spa is built to withstand harsh winters, as long as you follow a few key maintenance steps. Below are our top 10 tips to keep your hot tub running smoothly all season long.
1. Drain and refill your tub before winter hits.
Once the temps drop below freezing, a full drain and refill isnโt safe. Do this in the fall and again in the spring for best results. If it must be done in winter, wait for a day above 20ยฐF.
2. Always keep your spa covered when not in use.
This reduces heat loss and saves energy. Make it a habit to close the cover after every use.
3. Double-check that your cover is sealed tightly.
Walk around all four sides to ensure the cover is pulled fully over the edges. Press down firmly to keep heat in and ice out.
4. Leave the cover open after adding chemicals.
After adding chlorine or other spa chemicals, run the jets and leave the cover open for a bit. This protects the cover from chemical damage.
5. Clean your circulation pump filter every 30 days.
A clogged filter can stop water circulation and shut off the heater โ which is dangerous in winter. Keep it clean to avoid costly problems.
6. Check your spa coverโs weight.
If it feels unusually heavy, itโs likely waterlogged and no longer energy efficient. Replace it to retain heat and lower your energy bills.
7. Install a handrail for safety.
Steps can get slippery in winter. A handrail helps prevent falls and adds peace of mind when entering or exiting your tub.
8. Remove snow from your spa cover regularly.
Snow buildup adds weight that can damage the cover. Use a soft broom (not a shovel) to gently brush it off.
9. Stay consistent with maintenance.
Even in winter, you still need to test water, add chemicals, clean filters, and check your equipment regularly.
10. Use your hot tub often!
A spa thatโs used regularly is less likely to have issues. Plus, thereโs nothing better than a warm soak on a cold winter day.
By staying on top of these simple tasks, youโll avoid costly repairs, extend the life of your hot tub, and enjoy stress-free soaks all winter long. If you have any questions or need supplies, weโre always here to help.
Stay warm and soak often!
