MOVIE NIGHT: HAPPY GILMORE

With the passing of a legend, like Bob Barker, we must acknowledge his only appearance in a studio film production. Rest in peace Bob! ✊🏻

Happy Gilmore is a quirky Adam Sandler comedy about a hockey player that can’t really compete at a pro level, or even a pro am level for that matter, as skating is required.

By some miracle, Happy’s monster slap shot translates into an unusual, yet effective, golf swing. With his grandmother’s house about to be foreclosed on, he decides to start a golf career, despite his distaste for the pretentious sport.

Aiming for just enough money to save his grandmother’s house, the PR consultant persuades Happy to stay and see where it might take him. His unusual personality is changing the image of golf and increasing the popularity of the sport with the working class.

Not liking the new image, or having to share the limelight with Happy, the current champion, Shooter McGavin, set his sites in getting him kicked out of the pro tournament.

Tons of laughs ensue, including a hilarious scene with the iconic Bob Barker.

MOVIE NIGHT: JUST GO WITH IT (revisited)

Before I dive into this favorite of our family, I want to thank all those helping the people of Maui. Prayers for all those affected. 🙏🏻 Although I’ve posted this movie before, I thought it was worth revisiting, as it was filmed in Maui.

A young Danny, played by Adam Sandler, has his heart broken by his bride to be and he finds a perfect way to pick up women. Dr. Danny, now a plastic surgeon, has a thriving career but no one to share his life with.

Seemingly content with the friendship of his assistant and his flings with random women, he bumps into Palmer, the one, and realizes he has to do whatever it takes to keep her in his life. That’s when the truth becomes a bit muddled and life gets complicated.

While on a trip to Maui, his assistant Katherine, played by Jennifer Aniston, bumps into her old college friend and rival, Devlin Adams, played by Nicole Kidman. Not to be outdone by the successes her college rival has accomplished, she lies about being married to Danny. As the lies begin to unravel, Danny discovers the love that he’s been searching for.

Take a Devlin, grab some popcorn and find a comfy spot on the couch. This romcom is good for quite a few laughs and a dash of romance.

MOVIE NIGHT: DOC HOLLYWOOD

This film is one of many Michael J Fox movies that are frequently viewed in our home, a classic romcom that both my wife and I can enjoy together. You’ll find many familiar faces, including George Hamilton, Julie Warner, Bridget Fonda and Woody Harrelson; among others.

Ben Stone is a driven, young, doctor aiming to find success as a plastic surgeon in LA , after he finishes his internship in Washington, D.C. Driving to his interview with Dr. Halberstrom, of Beverly Hills, he jumps off the interstate and finds himself in a bit of hot water with the local authorities of Grady.

The only thing moving faster than Doc Stone, is the rumor mill in this small town. He must complete the community service hours he’s been sentenced to, for the damages his car caused while flying through this beautiful southern town.

This is not the life that Dr. Stone has in mind and is intent on getting to his interview. However, this small town isn’t without it’s charms and Lou, the ambulance driver, may be the key to changing his mind, despite the best efforts and determination of the mayor to keep Ben Stone as Grady’s new doctor.

Fun fact, many critics and reviewers find the similarities a bit too close between Disney’s Pixar film Cars and this movie. Check it out on YouTube.

If you’re looking for a few laughs, sprinkled with a touch of romance and a dash of small town hysterics, this Michael J Fox hidden gem might just be the ticket.

MOVIE NIGHT: THE FRISCO KID

This movie was a favorite in my household growing up and even if you’re a fan of Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford, odds are you’ve never seen this film from 1979.

Beginning in Poland, with the selection of the new rabbi for San Francisco, this comedic western adventure addresses the many details of the Orthodox Jewish religion and the childlike faith that Avram has in his God. Once he arrives in the city of brotherly love, he finds himself needing to find an alternate mode of travel, as all the ships have set sail, filled with gold fever stricken passengers, headed for San Francisco.

His pilgrimage from Philadelphia to the gold covered hills of San Francisco is all but smooth. He is beseeched by a confidence man, resurrected by the Amish, rides the rails and even works on the railroad; all before he bumps into a w***e mongering outlaw, that saves him from starvation. Then things get interesting, with death defying leaps, blizzards, bank robbing, Native American war parties, monks, bar fights, shootouts and even a little romance.

While this is film is a funny example of faith, miraculous intervention and true friendship, keep in mind that it does contain some adult humor, content and language. With that being said, see if you can find a copy at the Blockbuster Bend location, grab some snacks, have a seat and get ready for a wild and zany ride.

MOVIE NIGHT: KINDERGARTEN COP

This is another fun movie, filmed in Astoria, Oregon. Like most Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, you’ll find some great one liners to to toss around.

Detective John Kimble is hot on the trail of a criminal he’s been pursuing for years. A lead develops that sends him and his new partner undercover in Astoria.

Things take a turn for the worse for his partner and John ends up in a nightmare situation with a classroom full of kindergartners.

Whether you have kids or not, you’re guaranteed to enjoy this movie. Grab your popcorn and get ready for some laughs and a bit of that old school Arnold action. Be sure to pick up a copy at Blockbuster Bend.

MOVIE NIGHT: MR. BASEBALL

Having the opportunity to watch the Bend Elks Baseball Club on Friday, I thought why not throw out one of the baseball films I enjoy. It was great to watch these young players, at the beginning of their careers, pull out the dramatic win in the 9th.

This film, however, focuses on a slugger in his twilight years and his quest to rediscover his love for the game. Along the way, he forges some unexpected friendships and discovers a love for something other than baseball.

Tom Selleck and Dennis Haysbert lead a memorable cast and you’ll catch a glimpse, or two, of the Big Hurt toward the beginning of the film. This can be a great film to watch with your wife, or significant other, with sports and a dash of romance, how can you go wrong?

Grab a hotdog, a beer or some yakisoba and prepare for some baseball. Go Dragons!

MOVIE NIGHT: THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION

A phenomenal movie, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, which will keep you riveted and leave you inspired. If you haven’t had the opportunity to watch it, this is a must see film.

A young, enterprising, banker, Andy Dufresne is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Hard nosed and calculating Andy manages to stand his ground in prison, making friends with Red, the guy who can get things and managing to help many prisoners and guards throughout the many years he is incarcerated.

When an opportunity arises that could possibly prove Andy’s innocence, a turn of events brings the wardens house of cards crashing down.

MOVIE NIGHT: SOUND OF FREEDOM

In the last few weeks, I heard about a new movie coming out by one of my favorite actors, Jim Caviezel. You may remember him from films like The Count of Monte Cristo and Frequency.

This movie is based on a true story about Tim Ballard and his efforts to bring down the child trafficking and slavery trade around the world. The story focuses on his interaction with a missing boy and his sister.

The film captures you from the very beginning and never lets up. You’ll feel it pull at your heart strings and no matter how tough you are, I would recommend bringing a couple tissues. Despite the difficult moments, the movie is excellent and leaves you with a sense of hope. However, we must choose to live outside of our comfort zones and be aware of the very real dangers that plague our communities.

I challenge you to see this movie and not be moved to action. If you do, and are, take a moment to check out Operation Underground Railroad and see how you can help. At the very least, encourage others to see the film, share Tim’s story and support Angel Studios for producing these films. It sounds like a documentary and sequel are in the works.

MOVIE NIGHT: TOPGUN & TOPGUN: MAVERICK

Since we are in the midst of 4th of July weekend, with Independence Day arriving on Tuesday, I thought I would hit you with a two for one special.

In TOPGUN, Tom Cruise plays a cocky young Naval Aviator, Pete Mitchell. He ends up learning how to be the best of the best at the Navy’s TOPGUN. He has to overcome his family history and flys his way to the top but has trouble getting out of his own way. His experience in TOPGUN threatens to bring his Naval career to an end.

In TOPGUN: Maverick, Pete Mitchell is flying by the seat of his pants as a test pilot and still ticking off the brass. He’s managed to keep himself from being promoted and sticks to what he loves, flying. Battling his demons of the past, he finds himself with one last chance. Now he must train pilots for the impossible mission that lies ahead.

MOVIE NIGHT: THE GNOME-MOBILE

This is the 5th film in my series of movies that Disney has not yet added to Disney+.

A lumber tycoon and his grand children come across some gnomes on an outing. Upon explaining the situation with the gnomes to his head of security, Mulrooney lands himself in hot water and the gnomes find themselves in trouble with a side show operator. It’s up to the kids to save their grandfather and the gnomes.

You’ll recognize several of the actors from other Disney films. Grab some popcorn and enjoy this wonderful classic.
