Deschutes Wilderness Therapy

Deschutes Wilderness Therapy We have made the difficult decision to end our outdoor program operations by April 30th, 2024.

While we are not accepting new enrollments, our valued team members and beloved golden retrievers will ensure all current students can complete their treatment.

Welcome, January! Now that we have said goodbye to the holiday season, we look forward to the new year ahead! Many of us are exploring self-care to help support our mental health, and our students do the same. As part of the Deschutes Wilderness relationship-based, trauma-responsive approach, we use body-based therapies to help students learn to regulate emotions and Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga to increase body-brain awareness and connection.

And our canines get in on the experience as well, downward-facing dog in action! Downward-facing dog can improve circulation, calm the mind, reduce stress, and improve digestion.

Reflection and reminiscing often bring up reminders of things we want to change about the year or do differently in the upcoming one. At Deschutes, we help students process through the emotions that come along with these reflections which can be positive or negative. We also help students focus on setting goals for the upcoming year that are SMART. This acronym stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. By making sure goals are in SMART format, students can easily see when they have met their goal. Our students practice this daily so that it becomes muscle memory and can be used throughout their lives.

At Deschutes Wilderness Therapy, our interventions “match your brain.”

Deschutes Wilderness Therapy is grounded in evidence-based practices, clinical sophistication, and a philosophy founded on healthy attachments. Deschutes Wilderness does not rely on using shock as our primary avenue for change. Instead, we understand that a shocked brain cannot retain information and increases defenses towards lasting change; therefore, carefully assessing stress and strategically adjusting interventions to the individual and group is our priority.

How do we do this? Every student gets a stress pre-test with bio-feedback technology to ensure a level of readiness to be challenged in the field environment. Based upon these results, Deschutes individualizes the therapeutic intervention process to minimize the stress responses and defensive stances which leads to longer-lasting change.

What greater gift is there than that of joy and connection? We understand and honor that the holidays looked different this year for our families. Our students were able to experience and with us here at Deschutes Wilderness Therapy through the traditions shared with their peers and compassionate field staff.

From the unconditional love provided by our program canines, Ember and Flint - who are clearly in the holiday spirit! - to the peacefulness that settles in the woods and into one’s heart around a cozy fire, students enjoyed a wonderful holiday.

How did you find joy and connection as you celebrated the holiday?
