Lymphatic imaging techniques let us see how lymph actually moves through the face, neck, and head — and how that flow can get disrupted by surgery, cancer treatment, radiation, scar tissue, or chronic congestion.

When I’m palpating for lymphatic flow, scar adhesions, or subtle areas of restriction, these images help confirm what my hands feel. They deepen my understanding of how each client’s system might be rerouted or slowed — and guide my approach to restore balance.

This helps me support clients after:
- Facelift or cosmetic surgery recovery
- Head and neck cancer or radiation treatments
- Softening of swelling, scar tissue and fibrosis after head injuries
- Relief from sinus or head congestion

Manual lymphatic drainage and gentle scar tissue therapy can make a big difference in comfort, swelling, and mobility — especially in the delicate tissues of the face and neck.

ICG imaging of lymphatics, or Indocyanine green (ICG) lymphography, is an imaging technique used to visualize the lymphatic system in real-time. After being injected, the dye is absorbed by the superficial lymphatics and can be detected with a special camera, revealing the path and function of lymphatic vessels to assess drainage and identify abnormalities such as lymphatic damage or blockages.

This recent testimonial is one that truly touched me. It speaks to the power of combining lymphatic drainage with thoughtful scar tissue work.

"I had a total knee replacement 8 weeks ago and as often is the case with needing a total knee replacements, I had old scars from previous surgeries on that knee.Much of my swelling was trapped between these scars. Michelle was able to release quite a bit of the swelling through the lymphatic drainage massage which she excels at, but also by very precise and focused scar ( both the new scar and the old scars) work in which she is adept at moving the excess fluid across the scars. Not only that, but she allowed me to video her work and taught me how to do some of it on my own. Wow, who does that these days?? My recovery is moving along at a much more rapid pace with knowing how to move this excess swelling along after doing my PT which always produces more swelling. I highly recommend Michele for anyone post surgery! This was a real game changer and worth every penny!"

🔥 “Scars Hold More Than You Think”

The Silent Blockages Affecting Your Lymphatic System, Detox & Emotions

We often think of scars as healed wounds — closed chapters, no longer relevant to our health.
But what if I told you… your scars might be silently disrupting your body’s healing every single day?

This isn’t just theory.
It’s a deeply overlooked reality in both lymphatic health and emotional healing.

🧬 Scars = Blockages Beneath the Surface

When the skin is cut — through injury, surgery, or trauma — it doesn’t just affect the surface.
It cuts through fascia, disrupts lymphatic vessels, and can imprint itself in the nervous system.

As the body heals, scar tissue forms like glue. It binds. It tightens. It anchors.
And while this is necessary for wound closure, it often creates long-term stagnation in:
• Lymphatic drainage pathways
• Fascial flow and elasticity
• Neurovascular signaling
• Energetic and emotional processing

🌿 Common Types of “Stuck” Scars
• C-section or abdominal scars → Can block pelvic, digestive, and leg drainage
• Appendectomy scars → May affect colon motility and lymphatic gut support
• Thyroid or neck scars → Can limit vagus nerve tone and upper chest/cervical lymph flow
• Breast surgery/lumpectomy scars → Can congest axillary (armpit) and chest nodes
• Knee/hip surgery scars → May impair lower limb drainage and create chronic inflammation

You may feel fine… but your body remembers.

💥 Symptoms of Lymphatic or Fascial Blockage from Scars:
• Puffiness or swelling that won’t go away
• Tightness, pulling, or discomfort around the scar
• Poor digestion or bloating near abdominal scars
• Fatigue, brain fog, or a feeling of “being stuck”
• Emotional release or unexpected tears during scar work

Because trauma isn’t just held in the mind — it’s stored in the fascia, and it affects the lymph.

✨ How to Release the Scar and Restore the Flow:

Here’s the good news — scars can be softened, healed, and released.

Tools for Scar Healing:
• 🌿 Castor oil packs – to soften adhesions and improve circulation
• ✨ Red light therapy – to stimulate regeneration and collagen remodeling
• 🤲 Gentle lymphatic massage – to support drainage and decrease congestion
• 💨 Fascial release therapy – to unglue and rehydrate connective tissue
• 🪡 Dry needling or advanced scar release techniques – only by trained professionals
• 🕊️ Emotional somatic release – especially for trauma-related scars

🧠 Final WOW:

A scar might be only a few centimeters long…
But it can block the entire flow of detox, emotion, and energy.

🌬️ Where lymph cannot flow, inflammation grows.
🌸 Where fascia cannot move, emotions get stuck.
⚡ Where trauma isn’t released, healing can’t complete.

So if you’ve tried everything — and something still feels “stuck” — maybe the answer is… your scar.

Let healing rise beneath the surface.
Because every inch of your body deserves to flow freely again.

Tethered Cord Syndrome or Spinal Cord Tethering

Today I worked with a client recovering from tethered cord release surgery. She came in for lymphatic drainage and support to help reduce tightness and improve soreness in the skin around her surgical scar.

Tethered Cord Syndrome (TCS) is a rare condition in adults, but I’ve supported several clients through recovery—and personally know two people who’ve been diagnosed.

TCS is more commonly diagnosed in children, often because it’s associated with congenital spinal conditions like spina bifida. These cases are usually identified and treated early in life.

In adults, TCS may go undiagnosed for years. Symptoms can develop or worsen over time due to spinal growth, trauma, surgery, or degenerative changes.

Adult cases are less frequently recognized by general practitioners or even some specialists, which contributes to underdiagnosis and delays in treatment.

While this is a highly specialized surgery, Dr Priscilla Pang performs tethered cord release in Bend, Oregon.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage After C-Section or Abdominal Surgery

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle technique that supports the body’s natural healing process after a C-section or any abdominal surgery. It helps reduce swelling, puffiness, and plays a critical role in minimizing scar tissue formation.

In the early stages of recovery, this non-invasive work focuses on the superficial layers of the body, restoring diaphragmatic breathing, and stimulating all the major lymph node regions—commonly referred to as the Big 6.

You'll also learn a simple self-care lymphatic drainage technique you can perform at home to continue supporting your healing process.

✂️ C-Section Scars & Your Lymphatic System: What Really Happens Beneath the Surface

By Bianca Botha, CLT, RLD, MLDT & CDS

Many mothers are told that once a C-section scar heals on the outside, the body is “all fine” again. But the truth is, deep beneath the skin, your lymphatic system is often still affected. This silent disruption can explain why some women notice puffiness above their scar, heaviness in the legs, or a lingering sense of tightness in the lower abdomen.

🔄 How Lymph Normally Flows in the Abdomen

Your lymphatic system is a vast network of vessels that collect fluid, toxins, and immune cells and transport them through lymph nodes for cleansing. The lower abdomen and pelvis are major drainage hubs:
• Lymph from the legs, pelvic organs, and lower digestive system all passes upward through these channels.
• Smooth flow is essential to prevent swelling, bloating, or toxin buildup.

🚫 What Happens After a C-Section

During a C-section, both lymphatic and blood vessels are cut. While blood vessels repair themselves quite quickly, lymphatic vessels don’t always reconnect neatly. This can cause:
• Lymphatic congestion: Fluid can pool above the scar, leading to puffiness or a “ledge” of tissue.
• Impaired drainage from the legs: Swelling in the thighs, calves, or ankles can be more noticeable after long days of standing.
• Pelvic congestion: Lymph from the uterus, ovaries, and intestines may slow down, contributing to bloating or heaviness.

🧩 The Role of Scar Tissue

Scar tissue and adhesions act like roadblocks for lymph flow:
• Fibrous tissue can “trap” lymphatic fluid, preventing free circulation.
• Tissues and fascia may stick together, creating tightness or pulling sensations.
• Nerves in the area may also be affected, causing numbness or hypersensitivity.

🌐 Systemic Ripple Effects

Because lymph is interconnected, disruption in one area can affect the whole body. Common signs include:
• Swelling in the legs, feet, or lower abdomen
• Bloating and digestive changes
• Feeling of heaviness or fatigue in the lower body
• Persistent tightness or tenderness around the scar

🌱 Supporting Lymph Flow After a C-Section

The good news is that there are safe and effective ways to restore flow:
• Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A gentle therapy that helps re-route lymph around blocked areas.
• Scar Mobilisation: Light massage or fascial release can soften adhesions and improve circulation.
• Castor Oil Packs: Applied to the abdomen, they can reduce tension and promote flow.
• Movement & Breathing: Gentle stretching, walking, and diaphragmatic breathing help the abdominal “lymph pump.”

✨ Final Thoughts

A healed scar on the outside doesn’t always mean healed lymphatics on the inside. Understanding how your C-section scar impacts your lymphatic system is the first step to reclaiming lightness, reducing swelling, and restoring balance to your body. With the right care, your lymph can flow freely again, supporting your health and vitality long after birth.
